ASHWIN

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is set to embark on a new chapter in his illustrious cricketing journey after signing with Dublin Guardians for the inaugural season of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL). The veteran spinner will serve as both captain and mentor of the Dublin-based franchise, adding significant star power and experience to Europe’s first ICC-sanctioned multi-country franchise T20 competition.

The announcement marks another major milestone for the ambitious tournament, which aims to establish itself as a premier franchise league while fostering cricket development across Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands.

Ashwin Takes Leadership Role in Dublin

At 39 years of age, Ashwin continues to remain a prominent figure in global franchise cricket despite stepping away from the Indian Premier League following the conclusion of the 2025 season. His appointment as captain and mentor of Dublin Guardians underlines the league’s intent to combine established international stars with emerging local talent.

The Dublin franchise carries additional significance due to its ownership structure. The team is owned by former India captain and legendary coach Rahul Dravid, creating a high-profile Indian connection within the new European competition. The partnership between two of India’s most respected cricketing minds is expected to bring both credibility and expertise to the franchise.

Although Ashwin retired from the IPL, he remains active in franchise cricket and currently represents the San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket, showcasing his continued relevance in the shortest format of the game.

Europe’s First Multi-Country Franchise League

The European T20 Premier League represents a landmark development in European cricket. Jointly backed by Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland, and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association, the tournament is the first ICC-approved franchise league to operate across multiple countries.

The inaugural edition is scheduled to take place from August 26 to September 20 and will feature six city-based franchises representing the three participating nations.

The teams competing in the first season are:

  • Dublin Guardians
  • Amsterdam Flames
  • Rotterdam Dockers
  • Belfast Irish Wolves
  • Edinburgh Castle Rockers
  • Glasgow Cosmics

Matches will be hosted across venues in Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands, providing cricket fans across Europe an opportunity to witness international stars competing in their home countries.

Star-Studded Player Line-Up

Ashwin’s signing further strengthens an already impressive list of international players who have committed to the tournament.

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis will lead Rotterdam Dockers while also serving as a co-owner of the franchise alongside fellow South African stars Heinrich Klaasen and Jonty Rhodes. Rotterdam have also secured the services of explosive batter Donovan Ferreira, fast bowler Anrich Nortje, and Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen.

Amsterdam Flames have assembled a formidable squad featuring Australian stars Mitchell Marsh and Steven Smith, New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell, and Dutch internationals Scott Edwards and Bas de Leede.

Meanwhile, Glasgow Cosmics have signed South African internationals Lungi Ngidi, Keshav Maharaj, and Duan Jansen, while New Zealand’s hard-hitting opener Finn Allen adds further firepower to their squad.

Edinburgh Castle Rockers will be captained by New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner, who will reunite with fellow Black Caps pace legend Trent Boult.

Belfast Irish Wolves have entrusted their leadership responsibilities to Australian star Glenn Maxwell, one of the most experienced T20 cricketers in the world. Australian power-hitter Tim David has also signed up for the competition.

High-Profile Ownership and Coaching Setup

The ETPL’s appeal extends beyond its playing roster, with several iconic cricket personalities involved as franchise owners and coaches.

Rahul Dravid’s ownership of Dublin Guardians is among the most notable associations. Amsterdam Flames boast Australian legend Steve Waugh among their ownership group, while Edinburgh Castle Rockers feature former New Zealand internationals Kyle Mills and Nathan McCullum.

Rotterdam Dockers have perhaps the most star-studded ownership structure, with Faf du Plessis, Heinrich Klaasen, Jonty Rhodes, and Bollywood actor John Abraham all involved.

The league itself also has significant celebrity backing, with Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan among its co-owners.

On the coaching front, former Australian opener Matthew Hayden will serve as both co-owner and head coach of Glasgow Cosmics, while former England wicketkeeper James Foster has been appointed head coach of Edinburgh Castle Rockers.

Opportunity for European Cricket Development

Beyond attracting international stars, the ETPL has a broader vision of developing cricket within Europe.

Organisers hope that emerging cricketers from Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands will benefit immensely from sharing dressing rooms with some of the most accomplished players in world cricket. The exposure to elite-level competition, leadership, and coaching is expected to accelerate the development of local talent.

The remaining squad positions across all six franchises will be filled during the player draft scheduled for July 2.

Ashwin’s New Challenge

For Ravichandran Ashwin, the move represents yet another exciting challenge in a career defined by constant evolution and reinvention. Widely regarded as one of India’s greatest match-winners and among the finest spin bowlers in cricket history, Ashwin now has the opportunity to shape the future of European franchise cricket while extending his own remarkable journey in the global T20 landscape.

As captain and mentor of Dublin Guardians, Ashwin’s role will extend beyond his performances on the field. His tactical acumen, leadership experience, and vast knowledge of the game could prove invaluable in establishing the franchise as a competitive force in the inaugural edition of the European T20 Premier League.

With international stars, legendary owners, and a unique multi-country format, the ETPL is positioning itself as one of the most intriguing additions to the global T20 calendar, and Ashwin’s involvement only adds further prestige to an already ambitious project.
