VIJAY

Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar has officially announced his retirement from domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League, bringing an end to a professional career that spanned more than a decade across formats.

The 35-year-old shared the news through an emotional post on Instagram, thanking teammates, coaches, franchises and fans while reflecting on the highs and challenges of his cricketing journey.

Vijay stated that he is stepping away from domestic and IPL cricket to pursue “new opportunities” and continue playing cricket in different capacities.

His retirement marks the conclusion of a career that saw him represent Tamil Nadu cricket team, multiple IPL franchises, and the Indian national side across white-ball formats.

A Product of Tamil Nadu Cricket

Few players represented the Tamil Nadu cricket structure as consistently as Vijay Shankar.

Having started from the Under-13 level, Vijay progressed through every age-group category before making his senior debut for Tamil Nadu in 2012. Over the next 13 years, he became a regular presence in the side as a dependable middle-order batter and useful medium-pace option.

Before the 2025-26 domestic season, Vijay made a late-career move to Tripura cricket team, but his strongest association remained with Tamil Nadu cricket.

Across formats, his domestic numbers reflected his value as a genuine utility cricketer:

  • 77 first-class matches
  • 4253 first-class runs
  • 43 first-class wickets
  • 112 List A matches
  • 2790 List A runs
  • 73 List A wickets
  • 159 T20 matches
  • 2583 T20 runs

While he may not have always grabbed headlines, Vijay built a reputation as a reliable team player capable of contributing in multiple roles.

IPL Career Across Multiple Franchises

Vijay Shankar’s IPL journey began with Chennai Super Kings in 2013.

Opportunities were initially limited, but he gradually established himself as a useful batting all-rounder in the league. His breakthrough phase came after joining Sunrisers Hyderabad and later Delhi Capitals.

His 2018 season with Delhi Capitals proved especially important, where he scored 212 runs and showcased his finishing ability under pressure.

Vijay then returned to Sunrisers Hyderabad and remained with the franchise between 2019 and 2021, becoming a regular part of their middle-order plans.

In 2022, he joined Gujarat Titans during their historic title-winning debut season, although his role remained limited.

His finest IPL season with the bat came in 2023, when he scored 301 runs at an impressive strike rate exceeding 160. That season reminded fans of the clean ball-striking and composure that had made him a valued T20 cricketer.

A return to Chennai Super Kings in 2025 offered a nostalgic homecoming, but an underwhelming campaign meant he went unsold in the following IPL auction.

Despite criticism at various stages of his career, Vijay remained a sought-after squad player because of his flexibility and ability to balance batting depth with medium-pace bowling options.

India Career and World Cup Memories

Vijay Shankar’s performances in domestic and IPL cricket eventually earned him a place in the Indian national side during 2018 and 2019.

He represented India national cricket team in:

  • 12 One-Day Internationals
  • 9 T20 Internationals

His international career coincided with a period when India were searching for balance in the middle order ahead of the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Vijay was viewed as a player who could fill the crucial No.4 role while also offering useful seam bowling in English conditions. That versatility ultimately earned him selection in India’s 2019 World Cup squad.

Although his World Cup campaign was cut short by injury, he still produced one unforgettable moment.

During the high-profile clash against Pakistan national cricket team, Vijay replaced Bhuvneshwar Kumar midway through an over and dismissed Imam-ul-Haq with his very first ball in the tournament.

It became one of the defining moments of his international career.

Another memorable contribution came in Nagpur, where Vijay successfully defended 11 runs in the final over against Australia national cricket team, helping India secure its historic 500th ODI victory.

In his farewell message, Vijay specifically mentioned both moments as memories he would cherish forever.

Emotional Farewell Message

In his retirement statement, Vijay expressed gratitude toward the Board of Control for Cricket in India, teammates, coaches and franchises that shaped his career.

He described representing India as the “highest badge of honour” and reflected on the lessons cricket taught him throughout his life.

However, one part of his statement stood out emotionally — his reference to online criticism and negativity.

Vijay acknowledged facing significant hate on social media in recent years but stated that he chose to ignore it and move forward positively.

The all-rounder’s comments highlighted the growing pressure modern cricketers face in the digital era, where performances are constantly scrutinised and public criticism can often become deeply personal.

Despite those challenges, Vijay maintained that cricket remained central to his identity and life.

A Career Defined by Utility and Resilience

Vijay Shankar’s career may not have been filled with record-breaking numbers or superstar status, but it was defined by resilience, adaptability and professionalism.

He often found himself discussed in debates around team selection, particularly during the 2019 World Cup period, yet he continued to work quietly and contribute wherever required.

Whether as a stabilising middle-order batter, a part-time seam option, or a dependable domestic performer, Vijay consistently fulfilled team requirements without demanding the spotlight.

Players like him are often crucial in building strong squads, even if they rarely dominate headlines.

What Comes Next?

While retiring from domestic cricket and the IPL, Vijay indicated that he intends to continue exploring opportunities within the game.

Given his experience across formats and conditions, there is likely to be interest from franchise leagues, coaching setups, commentary roles, or mentorship programmes in the future.

For Tamil Nadu cricket especially, his retirement marks the end of an era involving one of the state’s most recognisable modern all-rounders.

And although his international career was relatively brief, Vijay Shankar leaves the game with moments, memories and contributions that ensured he remained an important figure in Indian cricket during a competitive generation.
