BAHUTULE

India May Soon Add a Specialist Spin Coach

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is reportedly set to strengthen the support staff of the Indian men’s cricket team, with former spinner Sairaj Bahutule emerging as the leading candidate for the role of spin-bowling coach. The 53-year-old, currently associated with Punjab Kings in the ongoing Indian Premier League, is expected to part ways with the franchise once the season concludes.

According to reports, discussions regarding the role have already taken place between Bahutule, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and senior BCCI officials. While no official announcement has been made yet, indications suggest that the move is progressing positively.

Gambhir’s Interest in a Dedicated Spin Specialist

One of the key aspects behind this development is Gambhir’s apparent desire to include a dedicated spin-bowling expert within the Indian coaching setup. At present, the support staff includes batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, fast-bowling coach Morne Morkel, fielding coach T Dilip, and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate.

However, the absence of a designated spin-bowling coach has been noticeable, especially considering India’s long-standing strength in spin bowling. Gambhir is believed to have personally recommended Bahutule for the role, reflecting his confidence in the former spinner’s coaching abilities.

Strong Reputation as a Spin-Bowling Coach

Although Bahutule’s international playing career was relatively brief—comprising two Tests and eight One-Day Internationals between 2001 and 2003—his reputation as a coach has steadily grown over the years.

Within Indian cricket circles, he is widely respected for his technical understanding of spin bowling and his ability to work closely with developing players. His experience at the National Cricket Academy, now known as the Centre of Excellence, helped him establish strong connections within the Indian cricket system.

His coaching approach is considered detail-oriented, particularly in areas such as variations, control, and adapting to different match situations—qualities highly valuable in modern cricket.

Previous Experience with Team India

Bahutule is not entirely new to the Indian team environment. During his tenure at the National Cricket Academy under VVS Laxman, he travelled with the senior national side on several occasions.

Notably, former India head coach Rahul Dravid had specifically requested Bahutule’s inclusion in the support staff during the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He also worked alongside Dravid during India’s tour of Sri Lanka, gaining valuable exposure to the demands of international coaching at the highest level.

These experiences have likely strengthened his candidature, as he already understands the culture, expectations, and operational dynamics of the Indian dressing room.

IPL Experience Adds to Credentials

Bahutule’s recent work in franchise cricket has further enhanced his profile. He joined Punjab Kings under head coach Ricky Ponting ahead of the current IPL season, contributing to the development of the team’s bowling resources.

Before his stint with Punjab Kings, he was associated with Rajasthan Royals under Rahul Dravid. Working across different franchises has exposed him to varied team environments, tactical approaches, and high-performance systems.

This combination of domestic, franchise, and international exposure makes him a strong fit for the evolving demands of modern coaching.

Why a Spin Coach Matters for India

India’s cricketing identity has historically been closely linked with spin bowling. From classical finger spinners to modern wrist-spinners, India has consistently produced world-class spin talent. However, contemporary cricket requires more specialized coaching than ever before.

With packed international schedules, varied playing conditions, and the rise of aggressive batting in all formats, spinners now need advanced tactical planning and technical refinement. A dedicated spin-bowling coach could play a key role in helping bowlers adapt across formats and conditions.

Bahutule’s appointment would therefore not just fill a vacant role but also strengthen an area that remains central to India’s success, particularly in Tests and subcontinental conditions.

Punjab Kings Unlikely to Object

Although Bahutule is currently contracted with Punjab Kings, the franchise is not expected to stand in the way of his move to the national setup. Opportunities involving the Indian team are generally treated with priority and respect within Indian cricket.

Reports suggest that Bahutule may have to shorten his tenure with the franchise if the appointment process is finalized soon. However, such a transition is expected to happen smoothly, considering the prestige associated with a national coaching role.

Timing and Future Prospects

The exact timeline for Bahutule joining Team India remains uncertain and will likely depend on contractual formalities and scheduling. However, signs indicate that the onboarding process could happen in the near future.

If appointed, Bahutule will enter the setup at an important phase for Indian cricket, with the team balancing preparations across formats and major international tournaments. His expertise could prove particularly useful in developing younger spin bowlers and refining the strategies of established players.

A Strategic Addition to Team India

Sairaj Bahutule’s likely appointment as India’s spin-bowling coach reflects a strategic effort to strengthen the national team’s support structure. Backed by the confidence of Gautam Gambhir and respected for his coaching expertise, Bahutule appears well-positioned to take on the role.

His experience across domestic cricket, the IPL, and previous assignments with Team India gives him the credibility and familiarity required for such a responsibility. If finalized, the move could provide India with a more specialized and balanced coaching setup—one that aligns with the evolving demands of international cricket.
