Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the ODI captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team, addressed growing questions about his leadership ahead of the upcoming ODI series against the Pakistan national cricket team. Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Miraz appeared calm but reflective as he spoke about his captaincy and the expectations surrounding him. While speculation continues about whether he will lead Bangladesh in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, the all-rounder made it clear that his main priority is the team’s success rather than personal milestones.
Miraz took over the ODI captaincy from Najmul Hossain Shanto during a period of transition in Bangladesh cricket. However, the Bangladesh Cricket Board appointed him as captain for only one year instead of extending his tenure until the next World Cup. The move suggested that the board wanted to evaluate his leadership before making a long-term decision. Since taking over the role, Miraz’s record has come under scrutiny as Bangladesh have managed to win only three of the 13 ODIs he has captained so far. Despite these results, Miraz insisted that the upcoming series against Pakistan should not be viewed as a personal test for him as captain.
The Bangladesh skipper emphasized that captaincy exists only because a team needs a leader, and any captain requires time to build a stable and successful side. According to him, if a captain is given adequate time and trust, it becomes easier to develop the team and achieve better results. Miraz explained that his focus remains on performing well for the needs of the team rather than worrying about the future of his leadership. Ultimately, he acknowledged that decisions about captaincy will always be made by the cricket board.
The upcoming three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Pakistan will be played at the renowned Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on March 11, 13, and 15. The series is expected to play an important role in Bangladesh’s preparations for future international tournaments. Miraz highlighted that the importance of the series goes beyond individual players or leadership debates. For him, the biggest priority is ensuring that Bangladesh performs well as a team and continues to move in the right direction ahead of global competitions.
Miraz also revealed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board has not yet discussed the duration of his captaincy with him. While there has been plenty of speculation about his leadership, he admitted that the matter has not been formally addressed by the board. According to Miraz, such decisions are not in his control and will eventually be taken by the board officials at the appropriate time. He suggested that discussions regarding the captaincy could take place after the Pakistan series or perhaps after the next series when the board reviews the team’s progress.
Bangladesh’s recent ODI form has also attracted criticism, but Miraz believes the situation should be viewed with context. He pointed out that the team has played relatively few ODI matches since the last World Cup, with long gaps between series. According to him, these interruptions can make it difficult for a team to maintain consistency and rhythm. While Bangladesh lost their first two series under his leadership, Miraz highlighted that the team managed to recover in the most recent series by winning matches and securing a series victory. That improvement, he believes, shows that the team is gradually finding its momentum again.

Apart from leadership questions, Miraz’s own performances have also been closely analyzed. Since becoming captain, he has scored 173 runs at an average of 21.62 while taking 11 wickets at an average of 32.9. Although these numbers may not fully reflect his potential as an all-rounder, Miraz said he does not worry excessively about personal statistics. He explained that throughout his career he has always tried to focus on what the team needs rather than his own numbers.
At the same time, Miraz acknowledged that his role as an all-rounder is extremely important for Bangladesh. Batting in the middle order and bowling during crucial phases of the match means he often finds himself involved in key moments of the game. Because of this, he understands that performing consistently with both bat and ball will play a major role in helping the team succeed. As captain, he also recognizes that the team’s overall results are closely linked to his own contributions on the field.
Despite the pressure and ongoing debates about his leadership, Miraz remains determined to give his best for Bangladesh. Whether he continues as captain in the long term or not, he believes his responsibility is to contribute positively whenever he steps onto the field. For Miraz, the most important goal is helping Bangladesh become a stronger and more competitive side in international cricket.
As Bangladesh prepare to face Pakistan in the ODI series in Dhaka, Miraz’s leadership will inevitably remain under the spotlight. However, the captain appears focused on the bigger picture, emphasizing that the success of Bangladesh cricket matters far more than individual roles or titles.
