The Australian fast-bowling stocks have taken another significant hit. Young speedster Mahli Beardman has been ruled out for the remainder of the domestic season after scans confirmed a lumbar bone stress injury.
The 20-year-old sensation recently reached a career high, making his international debut in the T20 series opener against Pakistan. However, his rise was abruptly halted when he experienced lower back soreness during a warm-up for the second match.
After returning to Perth, Cricket Australia confirmed the stress fracture, ending his hopes of a Sheffield Shield debut for Western Australia this summer.

Beardman’s setback is particularly frustrating given his pedigree. He was the spearhead of Australia’s 2024 Under-19 World Cup victory and a breakout star for the BBL-winning Perth Scorchers.
Despite his talent, his workload has been carefully managed due to a history of back issues common in young quicks.

Reflecting on his recent debut in Lahore, Beardman noted:
“It was the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life… but it’s an absolute honour to be able to represent my country.”
Unfortunately, he now joins a crowded Australian injury ward. The list of sidelined stars includes:
- Pat Cummins: Recovering from a back stress injury.
- Josh Hazlewood: Out with an Achilles issue.
- Spencer Johnson: Sidelined with a back stress fracture.
- Lance Morris & Callum Vidler: Both missing the season due to back injuries.

While the pace battery looks depleted, there is some good news. Nathan Ellis is nearing a return from a hamstring injury, recently bowling at full tilt in Colombo. As the T20 World Cup approaches, Australia will be desperate for his fitness to hold while Beardman begins his long period of rehabilitation.
