One of India’s most legendary escapes took place at The Oval in 1979. Sunil Gavaskar led a herculean effort to save the match after England posted 305 runs in the first innings, with Graham Gooch scoring 79.

Despite the challenging situation, Gavaskar’s masterful batting helped India avoid defeat, setting the stage for future triumphs.

4. India vs England, Lord’s, 2007

In 2007, India faced a tense situation at Lord’s, with England just one wicket away from victory. Thanks to MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 76 off 159 balls and some assistance from rain, India managed to secure a draw.

This escape was pivotal, as India went on to win the second Test and clinch their third series victory in England, a significant milestone in Indian cricket.

3. India vs New Zealand, Napier, 2009

Gautam Gambhir was the hero at Napier in 2009. Asked to follow on after conceding a 314-run first-innings lead, Gambhir batted for 436 balls to score 137 runs, helping India draw the match.

VVS Laxman also contributed with a century, and with key contributions from Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, India made a massive third innings total of 476/4, ensuring the series remained in their favor.

2. India vs Australia, SCG, 2021

Arguably one of India’s finest away series efforts, the 2021 Test at the SCG was a masterclass in resilience. Chasing 407, Rohit Sharma’s explosive start was complemented by partnerships from Pujara and Pant.

Hanuma Vihari and R. Ashwin showcased incredible grit, batting 43 overs despite injuries to secure a draw. This effort kept the series alive, with India eventually winning the series at Gabba.

1. India vs England, Manchester, 2025

Most recently, in 2025, India faced a daunting challenge at Manchester. Trailing by 311 runs and 2-1 in the series, India batted through five sessions, losing only two wickets.

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul’s partnership of 188 laid a strong foundation, followed by a 203-run stand between Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. Their relentless fight kept the series alive, with England leading 2-1 going into the final Test.
