Team India kicked off their WTC 2027 cycle with a challenging tour of England, starting with the 1st Test match [ENG vs IND]. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, they were defeated by a margin of 5 wickets. This ENG vs IND 1st Test marked a significant milestone as it was the first under the leadership of young Shubham Gill, who was entrusted with captaincy responsibilities.
However, Gill’s debut as captain was under some scrutiny. Handling a new and young team in a foreign land, especially during the initial phase of a new cycle, is always challenging. The pressure to perform and lead effectively was evident.

Adding to the complexity, former Indian cricketer Murali Karthik raised questions about the captaincy decisions on the field in the 1st test of ENG vs IND. During a discussion on Cricbuzz, Karthik and other senior players observed that multiple players appeared to be acting as captains simultaneously.
Karthik noted, “I saw many three leaders on the field to handle the fielding part.” He pointed out that during the game, Shubham Gill, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul all seemed to be giving instructions or making field placements. Karthik further explained that this multiplicity of voices created confusion. “A person can only listen to a single mind. When there are many, it leads to chaos,” he said.
He elaborated on his observations, mentioning, “KL Rahul was making hand movements, Rishabh Pant was also doing it, and Gill, the newly appointed captain, was giving instructions. It just becomes too complicated.” Karthik emphasized that effective leadership requires clarity, especially in crucial moments of the game.
