In a thrilling first One Day International (ODI) match of the three-match series between India and Australia, Mohammed Shami stole the spotlight with a career-best bowling performance, securing India’s long-awaited victory at the Mohali stadium.

The match not only marked a historic win but also witnessed some light-hearted banter between Shami and renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle.

As the humid conditions in Mohali tested the players’ endurance, Harsha Bhogle couldn’t resist asking Shami if he was feeling the heat. Shami, in his characteristic style, replied with a touch of humor, pointing out that commentators had the luxury of sitting in the air-conditioned commentary box, while the players were battling the challenging conditions on the field. A light-hearted moment that added to the charm of the game.

Breaking a curse that had haunted India since 1996, the team managed to secure a significant victory over the Australian side. The match featured a fairly routine chase, with improved batting performances in the second innings as the pitch eased up.

Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad showcased their talent with dazzling strokeplay, both notching up half-centuries. However, Adam Zampa’s three quick wickets, including the dismissals of Gill and Ruturaj, and a run-out of Shreyas Iyer, briefly tilted the balance.

Tensions ran high when Ishan Kishan fell attempting an audacious upper cut, but Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul stepped up to steady the ship. Suryakumar displayed remarkable restraint, combining textbook shots with his attacking instincts to bring India closer to victory.

Although he couldn’t finish the job, KL Rahul, the captain, remained composed, scoring a crucial fifty and ensuring victory with eight balls to spare.
