FLEMING

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially parted ways with legendary head coach Stephen Fleming, ending one of the longest and most successful coaching partnerships in Indian Premier League (IPL) history.

The franchise confirmed on Monday that the decision was made mutually after a series of discussions between Fleming and the CSK management. His departure marks the end of an extraordinary 18-year association that saw the franchise become one of the most successful teams in world franchise cricket.

Fleming has also stepped down as head coach of Joburg Super Kings in South Africa’s SA20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket (MLC), bringing his coaching stint across the Super Kings network to a close.

End of a Historic Era

Stephen Fleming first joined Chennai Super Kings as a player ahead of the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before taking over as head coach in 2009.

Over the next 17 seasons, he transformed CSK into one of the IPL’s most consistent and dominant franchises.

Under his leadership, Chennai Super Kings won:

  • Five IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023)
  • Two Champions League T20 titles (2010 and 2014)
  • 12 playoff appearances
  • 10 IPL finals, the most by any franchise

His calm leadership, tactical brilliance and ability to build a stable team culture became synonymous with CSK’s sustained success.

Mutual Decision After Difficult Seasons

Speculation over Fleming’s future had intensified after Chennai Super Kings endured three consecutive IPL seasons without lifting the trophy.

Following a last-place finish in 2025, CSK finished eighth in the 2026 season, raising questions about whether the franchise needed a fresh direction.

After CSK’s final league match this year, Fleming had hinted that the decision regarding his future rested with the management.

On Monday, both parties confirmed they had mutually agreed to end their long-standing partnership.

The announcement also followed a disappointing Major League Cricket campaign, where Texas Super Kings finished at the bottom of the table, while Joburg Super Kings have yet to reach an SA20 final in four seasons.

Fleming Bids Emotional Farewell

In his farewell message, Fleming reflected on his remarkable journey with the franchise.

He described his time with Chennai Super Kings as the greatest privilege of his coaching career and expressed immense pride in everything the team had achieved together.

Fleming thanked the players, management and supporters for nearly two decades of unforgettable memories, adding that CSK would always remain close to his heart and that he would continue supporting the franchise in the future.

Partnership with MS Dhoni Defined an Era

One of the defining aspects of Fleming’s tenure was his exceptional partnership with former captain MS Dhoni.

Together, the duo built one of the most successful player-coach combinations in cricket history.

Their shared philosophy of backing experienced players, maintaining stability in selection and trusting individuals during difficult phases became a hallmark of CSK’s success.

Some of the franchise’s greatest achievements came under their leadership, including back-to-back IPL titles in 2010 and 2011, the emotional title triumph in 2018 after CSK returned from a two-year suspension, and the memorable 2023 championship, when Dhoni reclaimed the captaincy midway through the previous season.

CSK Pays Tribute

CSK owner Rupa Gurunath praised Fleming’s immense contribution to the franchise.

She described him as the heartbeat of the coaching setup and credited him with helping shape the club’s identity, vision and pursuit of excellence over nearly two decades.

Although his coaching journey with the team has ended, she emphasized that Fleming will forever remain an integral part of Chennai Super Kings’ legacy.

CSK CEO KS Viswanathan also acknowledged Fleming’s impact beyond trophies.

He highlighted the New Zealander’s role in building a culture based on consistency, humility and teamwork, while praising his ability to understand players and bring out the best in every individual.

According to Viswanathan, Fleming’s influence extended well beyond the cricket field and helped establish CSK as one of the most respected sporting franchises in the world.

Legacy Beyond Silverware

While Fleming’s trophy haul is extraordinary, his greatest achievement may have been creating an environment of stability in a league known for constant change.

Unlike many IPL franchises that frequently changed coaches and captains, CSK remained committed to continuity under Fleming’s guidance.

His calm approach during both victories and setbacks earned respect across the cricketing world, making Chennai Super Kings one of the most admired teams in franchise cricket.

His leadership philosophy became a benchmark for several newer franchises across global T20 leagues.

What Next for CSK?

With Fleming’s departure confirmed, attention now turns to who will lead Chennai Super Kings into a new era.

The franchise has not yet announced a successor or revealed whether there will be changes to the rest of the coaching staff, including batting coach Mike Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons.

Replacing a coach who guided the team for nearly two decades will be one of the biggest decisions in CSK’s history.

Whoever takes over inherits not only one of cricket’s most successful franchises but also the challenge of maintaining the standards established by Stephen Fleming.

End of a Golden Chapter

Stephen Fleming leaves Chennai Super Kings as arguably the most successful coach in IPL history.

Across 18 unforgettable years, he helped build a dynasty defined by consistency, trust and championship success.

Although his time in the CSK dugout has come to an end, his legacy will remain deeply woven into the fabric of the franchise and the history of the Indian Premier League.
