India opener and T20I vice-captain Shafali Verma has been officially reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching its Code of Conduct during the second T20I against Zimbabwe in Raipur. The 22-year-old was handed one demerit point after throwing the ball onto the ground in frustration following a dropped catch.
The incident took place during Sunday’s match, in which India secured the series with one game remaining. Despite the disciplinary action, Shafali played a decisive role with the bat, scoring an unbeaten half-century to help India chase down the target comfortably.
How the Incident Happened
The incident occurred in the 12th over of Zimbabwe’s innings when batter Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano attempted to hit a delivery from Shree Charani towards mid-off.
Shafali, positioned in the fielding area, attempted to take the catch but failed to hold on to the opportunity. The ball subsequently struck her jaw, and she reacted by throwing it onto the ground in frustration.
The ICC subsequently reviewed the incident and determined that Shafali had breached Article 2.2 of its Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The provision relates to the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, fixtures and fittings during an international match.

ICC Imposes One Demerit Point
Match referee GS Lakshmi imposed the sanction, which Shafali accepted. As a result, there was no requirement for a formal disciplinary hearing.
The demerit point is Shafali’s first offence under the ICC’s disciplinary system in a 24-month period. While the incident resulted in an official reprimand, the sanction was limited to one demerit point.
The ICC Code of Conduct is designed to maintain discipline and uphold professional standards during international cricket matches. Players can receive sanctions for actions involving equipment, on-field behaviour and other breaches of the regulations.
Shafali Shines With the Bat Despite the Incident
Shafali responded with an outstanding batting performance in the same match, scoring an unbeaten 55 off just 25 deliveries. Her aggressive innings helped India complete the chase of Zimbabwe’s 103-run target before the end of the ninth over.
The result ensured that India clinched the three-match T20I series with a game to spare, underlining the team’s dominance in the contest.
Shafali’s contribution with the bat remained one of the key highlights of the match, even as the dropped catch and subsequent reaction attracted attention.
Final T20I Scheduled in Raipur
India and Zimbabwe are scheduled to meet in the third and final T20I at the same venue on Tuesday, October 20, as stated in the original schedule.
With the series already decided, the final match offers both sides another opportunity to assess their combinations and individual performances. For Shafali, the focus will be on carrying her batting form into the concluding fixture while ensuring that her on-field conduct remains within the ICC’s regulations.
