Pakistan opener Saim Ayub has been released from the national ODI squad for the remainder of the ongoing tri-series following a disappointing run of scores. The left-handed batter has struggled to make an impact in the tournament, managing just 6, 8 and 7 in his three innings.
According to a statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Ayub requested permission to return to domestic cricket to work on his batting and regain confidence. The request came after discussions with Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson.
The team management and national selection committee accepted Ayub’s request, acknowledging his assessment of his current form. The decision is intended to give the 24-year-old an opportunity to address his technical concerns and return to competitive cricket with renewed confidence.
Sahibzada Farhan Replaces Saim Ayub
Pakistan have named Sahibzada Farhan as Ayub’s replacement for the remaining matches of the tri-series. Interestingly, Farhan was not included in the original squad for the ODI tournament despite his recent elevation to the role of Pakistan’s T20I captain.
His inclusion provides Pakistan with another batting option as they prepare for the final stages of the competition. Farhan will now have an opportunity to make an impression if selected in the playing XI.
Ayub’s release comes at a time when Pakistan have already secured their place in the final, reducing the immediate pressure on the team management to make changes while allowing the opener to focus on his form.

Pakistan Already Through to the Final
Pakistan have enjoyed a strong campaign in the tri-series, winning their first three matches to qualify for the final. Their next fixture will be against Sri Lanka at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, October 27.
The match will provide Pakistan with an opportunity to maintain their winning momentum and fine-tune their combination ahead of the title clash scheduled for October 31.
With qualification already secured, the team management may use the remaining fixture to assess its options and give players an opportunity to establish themselves before the final.
Ayub Looks to Regain Batting Confidence
Ayub’s disappointing scores have prompted him to seek time away from the national setup to focus on his batting. His decision to return to domestic cricket reflects an attempt to address his current difficulties rather than continue struggling for runs at the international level.
For Pakistan, the priority will be to ensure that Ayub receives the opportunity to regain his rhythm and confidence. The young opener’s release also creates an opening for Farhan to strengthen his case for future selection.
With the final approaching, Pakistan will hope that the squad adjustment helps maintain their momentum. Meanwhile, Ayub will aim to use his time in domestic cricket productively and return to international duty in better form.
