NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand have suffered two injury setbacks ahead of their upcoming five-match T20I series against India, with Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes ruled out of the contest. New Zealand Cricket confirmed the developments on Friday, October 8, while announcing Josh Clarkson and Blair Tickner as replacements.

The injuries come at an important stage for the Black Caps, who are preparing to host India in a five-match series beginning later this month. With both teams expected to compete in an intense contest, New Zealand will hope their replacements can make an immediate impact.

Chapman Ruled Out with Hamstring Injury

Chapman sustained a tear in his left hamstring while playing in the European T20 Premier League last month. The injury has ruled him out of the T20I series against India, although there is some positive news regarding his recovery.

The left-handed batter is reportedly on track to return for the subsequent ODI series against India. His availability for the 50-over matches will depend on his recovery progressing as expected.

Chapman has been an important member of New Zealand’s white-ball setup, offering flexibility in the batting order. His absence will require the team management to reconsider its combinations for the T20I matches.

Josh Clarkson has been brought into the squad as his replacement. The all-rounder provides New Zealand with another option in both departments and will look to make the most of the opportunity.

Zak Foulkes Suffers Hip Flexor Injury

Fast bowler Zak Foulkes is the other player who will miss the series. He injured his right hip flexor during a recent training session with Canterbury.

Unlike Chapman, Foulkes does not yet have a confirmed return-to-play timeline. His recovery will be monitored before a decision is made about when he can return to competitive cricket.

New Zealand have named Blair Tickner as Foulkes’ replacement. The fast bowler’s inclusion adds depth to the team’s pace attack ahead of a challenging series against India.

With several matches scheduled in a short period, New Zealand will need their bowling resources to remain fit and available. Tickner will have an opportunity to strengthen his position in the squad while the team management assesses its options.

Rob Walter Backs the Replacements

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment at the injuries but was pleased to have experienced alternatives available.

Walter wished both Chapman and Foulkes a smooth recovery and said the team was fortunate to bring Clarkson and Tickner into the squad.

He also highlighted the enthusiasm of the two replacements, noting that both were excited to be part of what he expects to be an exciting T20I series.

The coach will now focus on preparing the revised squad for the opening match while ensuring the team maintains its balance despite the late changes.

India-New Zealand T20I Series Begins October 22

The five-match T20I series will begin in Christchurch on October 22. The contest is expected to provide both teams with an important opportunity to assess their combinations and test their players against strong opposition.

New Zealand will be led by Mitchell Santner, with a squad that combines experienced international players and younger options. Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell and Tim Seifert are among the batting resources available to the hosts.

The bowling attack features Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Adam Milne and Nathan Smith, with Tickner now joining the group.

Clarkson’s all-round ability could also prove useful as New Zealand look to maintain flexibility in their playing XI.

Although the injuries to Chapman and Foulkes are setbacks, the replacements give New Zealand an opportunity to explore alternative combinations before the series begins.
