India extended a startling record of bad luck in men’s international cricket when Shubman Gill lost the toss at the Oval ground on July 31. This marked India’s 15th consecutive toss lost across all formats, a streak that is highly improbable and underscores their ongoing misfortune.

Following a short break after an intense Test match at Manchester last week—where India gave a draw and the series remained 2-1 in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy—India and England resumed their rivalry in Oval.

For the fifth consecutive time in this series, India’s captain Shubman Gill failed to win the toss. Ben Stokes, leading England for the first time as captain, opted to field first on four occasions till yet. Notably, Gill has yet to win a toss as Test captain, highlighting the team’s ongoing challenges with luck in this crucial aspect of the game.

This streak of 15 consecutive toss losses is extraordinary, with the odds of such a run happening randomly being just 0.000061 percent (or one in 16,384). The last time an Indian men’s captain won the toss was on January 28, 2025, when Suryakumar Yadav secured a win in a T20I against England at Rajkot. Since then, India has endured an unbroken run of toss losses.
