Former Bangladesh national cricket team captain Mahmudullah has revealed that throughout his international career he often sacrificed his preferred batting position for the benefit of the team. Speaking during the Simply Sayeed podcast, the veteran cricketer reflected on the many compromises he made while representing Bangladesh and explained how he rarely spoke up about his personal preferences.
Mahmudullah admitted that deep down he always wanted to bat at No.4 or No.5 in the batting order. However, the team’s tactical requirements meant that he frequently had to bat in different positions depending on the situation. Despite having a preferred role in the middle order, he chose not to raise the issue with team management and instead accepted whatever responsibility was given to him.
Over the years, Mahmudullah became known as a dependable and adaptable cricketer who could adjust his game according to the team’s needs. Whether batting in the middle order or lower down the lineup, his primary focus remained on contributing to the team’s performance.
Adjusting to Constant Batting Order Changes
Mahmudullah also spoke about how his batting order would change frequently during matches. He recalled that former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza often asked him to shift positions depending on match situations. Because of his respect for Mashrafe and the team leadership, Mahmudullah rarely questioned those decisions.
There were occasions when he would perform well at one position, only to be asked to move elsewhere in the next match. Yet he continued to accept those changes quietly. According to Mahmudullah, the sacrifices he made in terms of batting position were significant, and he believes very few players had to adjust as much as he did during their careers.
Despite the challenges, he insisted that he never complained about the changes. For him, the ultimate goal was always the success of the Bangladesh team. If the team performed well, he felt satisfied with his contribution regardless of where he batted.
The Heartbreaking 2016 T20 World Cup Loss
One of the most emotional moments Mahmudullah recalled was Bangladesh’s dramatic defeat against the India national cricket team during the 2016 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match in Bengaluru. Bangladesh had been in a winning position before losing the match in the final moments, making it one of the most painful losses in the team’s history.
Mahmudullah said the defeat left the entire dressing room devastated. Players including Mushfiqur Rahim were in tears after the match as Bangladesh had been extremely close to securing a famous win. The emotional impact of that loss stayed with the team for a long time.
Looking back, Mahmudullah admitted that the team might have rushed things in the final moments by trying to hit boundaries instead of calmly finishing the game. That match, he said, became a major life lesson for him about handling pressure situations and staying composed until the final ball.
Difficult Phase Before the 2023 World Cup
Mahmudullah also revealed a painful incident that occurred before the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. After being dropped from the national team, he once went to practise at the Mirpur ground but was informed that he did not have permission to train there.
The veteran cricketer explained that he was surprised because he was still a contracted player with the board at the time. Despite the disappointment, he chose not to make the issue public and quietly left the ground without practising.
Instead, Mahmudullah continued working on his game privately at other venues. Months later, he was recalled to the national side and eventually became Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer in the World Cup tournament. Although he was proud of his performance, he admitted that the earlier treatment had hurt him deeply.

A Memorable Farewell to Test Cricket
Another significant chapter in Mahmudullah’s career came during his final Test match for Bangladesh in 2021. Before the tour of Zimbabwe, he had already decided that the upcoming Test would be his last in the format.
The opportunity to play that match came after a phone call from former Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan. Mahmudullah admitted that he had not practised with the red ball for several months before the series, but he still decided to give his best.
During the Test in Bulawayo, Mahmudullah produced a remarkable performance by scoring 150 runs. The innings turned out to be a perfect farewell moment as he ended his Test career with a memorable century.
Leaving the Game on His Own Terms
Reflecting on his journey, Mahmudullah emphasized that he always wanted to leave international cricket with dignity and self-respect. Throughout his career he put the team ahead of personal ambitions, often accepting difficult roles for the greater good of Bangladesh cricket.
His story highlights the dedication and humility that defined his career. For many fans, Mahmudullah will always be remembered not only for his performances but also for his willingness to sacrifice personal preferences in order to serve the team.
