Cricket is set to make a vibrant comeback to the Olympic stage at LA28, with both men’s and women’s competitions featuring six teams each. T20 cricket, one of the five new disciplines introduced for the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, brings a fresh excitement to the sporting landscape.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has laid out that each team will be able to nominate 15-member squads, making for a highly competitive atmosphere. With the official programme revealing 90 athlete quotas per category, anticipation builds around how these teams will be formed.

While cricket fans await clarity on the qualification criteria, it is understood that the home team, the USA, may receive direct entry, impacting available slots for other nations.
A significant consideration arises regarding representation from the West Indies. The Caribbean islands, competing as separate entities in the Olympics, have a unique challenge. For instance, during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Barbados represented the region in women’s T20 cricket as regional champions.
How such decisions will unfold for LA28 remains a topic of interest, especially given that West Indies may automatically qualify, pulling the spotlight on which island teams will seize the chance.

Cricket’s Olympic return, not seen since its brief appearance in Paris 1900, was officially confirmed in October 2023 during an International Olympic Committee meeting in Mumbai. The proposal to include cricket was well received, and the decision to ensure both men’s and women’s events feature six teams aligns with the inclusion strategy for team sports at LA28.
As the countdown to the Games continues, further announcements regarding qualification criteria are expected, making LA28 a potentially transformative event for cricket on the global stage. The ICC has suggested that team selection could rely heavily on T20 International rankings, offering a fairer selection process.
