ASIA CUP

India have suffered a major setback ahead of two important international tournaments, with Jemimah Rodrigues ruled out of both the Women’s Asia Cup and the 2026 Asian Games because of a serious hamstring injury.

The 25-year-old batter sustained a high-grade tear to her right hamstring while playing for Southern Brave in The Hundred in England on August 3. Following a detailed assessment by the BCCI Medical Team at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, the extent of the injury was confirmed.

Rodrigues had been expected to play an important role for India in the coming weeks, making her absence a significant blow to the team’s plans.

Pratika Rawal Replaces Rodrigues

The BCCI has named Pratika Rawal as Rodrigues’ replacement in India’s squad for the Women’s Asia Cup.

Rawal returns to the national setup after previously missing India’s recent Test against England because of an injury. She had required stitches on her knee after suffering an injury while fielding during an India A match.

The 25-year-old has represented India in ODIs but has yet to make her T20I debut. Her inclusion could therefore provide India with an opportunity to assess another batting option in the shortest format.

Rawal’s return comes at an important time, with India preparing for a demanding schedule that includes the Asia Cup and Asian Games within a matter of weeks.

India Begin Asia Cup Campaign on August 30

The Women’s Asia Cup will begin in the UAE on August 28, with India placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Thailand and Hong Kong China.

India’s campaign will begin against Thailand in Dubai on August 30 before the highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on September 5.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals, with the final scheduled for September 13.

India will enter the tournament as one of the leading contenders, but Rodrigues’ absence leaves the team without one of its most experienced white-ball batters.

India vs Pakistan Clash Without Rodrigues

The India-Pakistan fixture on September 5 will be one of the biggest matches of the Asia Cup.

Rodrigues’ absence will be particularly noticeable in such a high-pressure encounter. She has established herself as an important part of India’s middle order and has often been trusted to build partnerships and accelerate when required.

India will now need other batters to take greater responsibility, particularly during the middle overs.

The team management will also have to decide how best to balance experience and attacking options in the playing XI.

Asian Games Also Hit by Setback

Rodrigues’ injury will keep her out of the Asian Games in Nagoya as well.

Cricket at the Games will once again be played in the T20 format, with the competition scheduled from September 17 to October 3.

India are the top-seeded team in the women’s tournament and have been placed in the quarterfinal against Japan.

If India progress, they could face Bangladesh or Hong Kong China in the semifinal.

Pakistan are positioned on the opposite side of the draw, meaning the arch-rivals can only meet in the gold-medal final or the bronze-medal play-off.

Both medal matches are scheduled for September 22.

A Tight Schedule for Indian Women

Rodrigues’ injury comes at an especially difficult time because India face two major tournaments in quick succession.

The Asia Cup final is scheduled for September 13, while the Asian Games cricket competition begins just four days later.

Managing player workload and fitness will therefore be crucial for India’s campaign.

Rodrigues would have been expected to contribute across both tournaments, but her high-grade hamstring tear means India will have to move forward without one of their key batting options.

Rawal Gets a Fresh Opportunity

For Pratika Rawal, the injury to Rodrigues creates an important opportunity.

Although she has so far played only ODI cricket for India, her return to the squad gives the selectors another player to evaluate in T20 cricket.

Her previous injury setback also makes the recall particularly significant.

Having recovered from the knee problem that ruled her out of the England Test, Rawal will now be hoping to make the most of her opportunity and establish herself in India’s white-ball plans.

India Face Selection Questions

Rodrigues’ absence means India’s middle-order combination could undergo a change ahead of the Asia Cup.

The selectors will need to identify the best combination for the conditions in the UAE, while also preparing for the transition to the Asian Games.

India’s strength in depth should provide them with alternatives, but replacing a player of Rodrigues’ experience and versatility will not be straightforward.

Her ability to adapt to different match situations has made her a valuable member of India’s limited-overs setup.

Injury Blow Comes at Crucial Stage

The injury is also an unfortunate setback for Rodrigues personally.

She had been featuring in The Hundred for Southern Brave before suffering the injury on August 3. Her campaign was subsequently cut short, and further medical assessment confirmed that the injury was serious enough to rule her out of India’s upcoming tournaments.

For now, the priority will be rehabilitation and a complete recovery rather than rushing her back into competitive cricket.

India Still Among the Favourites

Despite Rodrigues’ absence, India remain among the strongest teams heading into both tournaments.

The Asia Cup will provide an immediate test, particularly with Pakistan and other competitive teams in the group stage.

The Asian Games will then offer another opportunity for India to compete for a major title in the T20 format.

However, the loss of Rodrigues means India’s squad will face an additional challenge.

With Pratika Rawal now coming into the Asia Cup squad, the focus will shift towards finding the right combination and ensuring that Rodrigues’ absence does not disrupt India’s preparations.

For Rodrigues, the immediate goal will be a full recovery. For India, the challenge is to move forward without one of their key batters during a crucial phase of the international calendar.
