INDIA

In yet another electrifying chapter of the India–Pakistan rivalry, India defeated Pakistan by 61 runs in a high-stakes group clash of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Colombo. The defending champions delivered a commanding performance with both bat and ball, booking their place in the Super 8 stage in style.

At the heart of India’s dominance was Ishan Kishan, whose explosive 40-ball 77 turned a tricky surface into his personal playground and set the foundation for a formidable total of 175/7.

Kishan’s Counterattack on a Spin-Friendly Surface

Colombo’s surface offered considerable assistance to slow bowlers throughout the evening. Pakistan responded by deploying a World Cup-record six spin options during India’s innings. However, Kishan appeared unfazed.

India’s innings began cautiously. Abhishek Sharma, returning to the XI, struggled to get going and eventually mistimed a shot off Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha, departing early. But that was the only bright moment for Pakistan in the PowerPlay.

Kishan immediately seized momentum. He launched Shaheen Afridi for a towering six off the very first ball he faced from the pacer, setting the tone for what would become a blistering innings. Alongside Tilak Varma, Kishan steadily dismantled Pakistan’s bowling plans.

The left-hander was particularly ruthless against spin. He hammered Abrar Ahmed for three consecutive boundaries to bring up his half-century and then attacked Shadab Khan, whose opening over leaked 17 runs. Even part-time spin from Saim Ayub was treated with disdain.

By the end of the ninth over, India were cruising at 89/2, largely thanks to Kishan’s calculated aggression.

Pakistan Fight Back Through Spin

Just when India threatened to post an even bigger total, Pakistan pulled things back. Ayub cleverly varied his pace and was rewarded with two wickets in the 15th over, including Kishan’s prized scalp. His dismissal – bowled while attempting another big shot – triggered a slowdown in India’s scoring.

From 89/2, India managed just 38 runs in the next six overs as Pakistan tightened the screws. The pitch continued to aid turn, making stroke play increasingly difficult.

However, India’s middle order ensured they did not squander the platform. Suryakumar Yadav crafted a fighting 32 off 29 balls, adapting well to the conditions. Pakistan’s pre-match spotlight bowler Usman Tariq delivered a tidy spell and even claimed the crucial wicket of the Indian skipper late in the innings.

Yet, finishing touches from Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh pushed India past the psychologically important 170-run mark — a total that proved more than enough.

Early Collapse Derails Pakistan’s Chase

For Pakistan, a strong PowerPlay was essential. Instead, they suffered a nightmare start.

Hardik Pandya, looking to atone for his first-ball duck, struck in the opening over with a wicket maiden as Sahibzada Farhan miscued a pull shot. In the very next over, Jasprit Bumrah produced a trademark yorker to trap Ayub leg-before.

Soon after, skipper Agha fell cheaply, leaving Pakistan reeling at 13/3 after just two overs. The required rate soared, and with India’s spinners yet to bowl, the mountain only grew steeper.

Indian Spinners Seal the Deal

Pakistan needed a partnership, and Usman Khan briefly provided hope with a counterattacking 44. But wickets kept tumbling at the other end.

Axar Patel dismissed Babar Azam, intensifying the pressure. India’s spin trio — Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar — applied relentless control.

Usman Khan, Pakistan’s best batter on the night, was eventually stumped off Axar. Mohammad Nawaz fell attempting to accelerate, while Tilak chipped in with a wicket of Shadab.

Chakaravarthy returned to claim wickets off successive deliveries, effectively ending any remote hopes of a miracle. Though he missed a hat-trick, Pandya wrapped things up in the 18th over as Pakistan were bowled out for 114.

India Cruise Into Super 8

The 61-run victory underlined India’s adaptability and depth. On a surface designed for spin, their top-order firepower and disciplined bowling attack combined seamlessly. Kishan’s fearless innings stood out not just for its stroke play, but for its timing — accelerating when conditions were toughest.

For Pakistan, the loss means they must now defeat Namibia in their final group fixture to secure qualification. Their overreliance on spin showed promise in patches but was undone by a fragile top order.

As the 2026 T20 World Cup progresses, India appear to be peaking at the right time. With momentum, balance, and match-winners firing, the defending champions have firmly signaled their intent.

Brief Scores:
India 175/7 (Ishan Kishan 77, Suryakumar Yadav 32; Saim Ayub 3/25)
Pakistan 114 all out (Usman Khan 44; Hardik Pandya 2/16, Varun Chakaravarthy 2/17)
India won by 61 runs.
