Indian Test cricket is presently going through a tough phase of transition with the withdrawal of senior players and infusion of a young, inexperienced lot under a new coaching staff. Though this raw talent promises much for the future, results at present—particularly on this ongoing tour of England. Here are the five main reasons behind India’s struggles in Test cricket today.

1. Absence of Rohit-Kohli’s experience:

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not been mere contributors to runs; they have also brought leadership and energy, which has always helped India do well in tough series. The two have been seen inspiring the team and marshalling them through tough situations.

At present, their unavailability has left a void— something that might dent the team’s confidence and on-ground strategy in long formats like Test cricket.

2. Gill struggling in captaincy:

Shubman Gill, the young captain has been under a lot of flak for tactical errors in misjudging the right time to introduce bowlers.

For example, he brought Washington Sundar into the attack very late in the Manchester test; hence, his effective bowling and opportunities missed. Such decisions prove that there is a learning curve for young captains when they have to operate in high-pressure situations.

3. Bumrah’s effect is getting weaker:

Bumrah was India’s best fast bowler. Now he is being figured out by teams who have worked out on his bowling patterns. If he can’t get important wickets on good batting pitches, India’s bowling strength goes down, and the team has less chance to win important Test matches.

4. No chance to Kuldeep in Playing XI:

Nothing has been the same for India in the spin department since R. Ashwin walked away, and things haven’t looked rosier with Kuldeep Yadav not making the playing XI either.

Clearly, there’s a gap; India doesn’t have enough solid spin options—options vital to be successful in English-like conditions. Without them, the balance and edge return to an otherwise toothless attack.

5. Management’s tactical mistakes:

Frequent selection changes. Inconsistent team management does not help with stability. Give Karun Nair a chance, drop him, play around with Sai Sudarshan for two matches-Unclear.

Even former cricketers like Gambhir should have been questioned on the planning, particularly with the usage of Bumrah that has led to a lack of any cohesive team strategy.
