Plans to bring the upcoming India-Japan one-off T20I to a wider audience are gathering pace, with the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) working to secure broadcast and streaming arrangements for the historic fixture.

India and Japan are scheduled to meet on September 22 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture. The match is being viewed as an important moment for Japanese cricket, but organising its live coverage has proved challenging because the game coincides with the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

The JCA is understood to be in discussions with ITW Universe regarding the broadcast rights. While an agreement is yet to be formally completed, the two sides are believed to be moving towards a memorandum of understanding that could open the door for the match to be shown on established television and digital platforms.

YouTube Streaming Was the Initial Plan

When the fixture was first announced, the most straightforward option appeared to be a basic live stream on YouTube.

Given that the match is a one-off international fixture involving teams at very different stages of development, finding a conventional broadcaster was always expected to be difficult. The original idea was therefore to produce the game using limited equipment and make it available to viewers through YouTube.

That option remains on the table.

However, discussions surrounding the broadcast rights have created the possibility that Indian viewers could watch the match through a more conventional television or digital platform. A global YouTube stream could still be retained, particularly for supporters following Japanese cricket from outside India.

The final arrangement is yet to be confirmed.

FanCode Among Digital Platforms in Discussions

FanCode is understood to be among the digital platforms being considered for the streaming rights. The platform has previously worked with the Japan Cricket Association on pathway competitions and therefore has an existing connection with Japanese cricket.

At the same time, ITW Universe is reportedly exploring options for linear television coverage. Star, Sony and Zee are believed to be among the broadcasters being approached.

Any agreement, however, will depend on the commercial and logistical feasibility of covering a single international game.

The match is scheduled to begin at 9:30am IST, which corresponds to 1pm local time in Japan.

Asian Games Create a Major Broadcast Challenge

The biggest complication surrounding the India-Japan match is its proximity to the Asian Games schedule.

The women’s cricket gold-medal match at the Asian Games is scheduled to begin only an hour after the India-Japan men’s game, at Korogi Athletic Park in Nisshin City, Aichi.

That creates a potentially significant clash for broadcasters.

India’s women’s team is among the leading contenders to reach the Asian Games final. If India does make the gold-medal match, broadcasters could find themselves dealing with two India-related cricket fixtures taking place almost simultaneously at venues separated by hundreds of kilometres.

Sony holds the broadcast rights for the Asian Games, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

For a broadcaster considering the India-Japan match, the overlap could make production resources, camera crews and other operational requirements considerably more difficult to manage.

September 23 Was Considered

The JCA and organisers are understood to have considered moving the India-Japan match to September 23 in an attempt to avoid the potential clash with the Asian Games women’s final.

However, that option was not straightforward.

Japan’s men’s cricket team is scheduled to travel to Aichi on September 23 ahead of its opening Asian Games group fixture against Afghanistan on September 24.

The distance between Sano and Aichi is roughly 400 kilometres, meaning that moving the India game by one day would have created additional logistical pressure for the Japanese team.

As a result, September 22 remains the planned date for the historic encounter.

India to Arrive in Sano on September 20

The Indian team is expected to arrive in Sano on September 20, giving the players some time to settle into the local conditions before the match.

A training session is planned for September 21, one day before the game.

The fixture is expected to carry considerable significance for Japanese cricket. Although India are overwhelming favourites on paper, the match represents an opportunity for Japan to share the field with one of the world’s strongest cricketing nations.

India could also remain in the Sano region for a short period after the match before moving towards Aichi for the Asian Games.

The Indian team’s Asian Games campaign is scheduled to begin on September 28, with a quarter-final fixture.

This makes the Japan match an interesting part of India’s wider schedule, providing the team with an international outing before its main Asian Games campaign gets underway.

Sano Venue Being Upgraded for Bigger Crowd

The JCA is also preparing the Sano International Cricket Ground for an audience significantly larger than its usual capacity.

The venue currently accommodates around 500 spectators. With interest expected to rise sharply because of India’s involvement, the organisers are looking to expand the facilities and prepare for a possible crowd of approximately 2,000.

The expected turnout would represent a major increase for the venue and could provide Japanese cricket with an important opportunity to showcase its growing popularity.

Hosting India is particularly significant for the JCA because the Indian cricket team enjoys an enormous following not only in India but also among cricket fans across Asia.

The increased capacity would allow more supporters to experience the occasion while also giving the organisers a chance to demonstrate that Japan can host international fixtures involving major cricketing nations.

More Than Just a One-Off Match

The India-Japan T20I is being positioned as more than simply another international fixture.

The match forms part of celebrations surrounding the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan and has been associated with the broader “Sport 75” initiative.

For the JCA, the encounter represents a chance to expose Japanese cricket to a much larger international audience. For Indian cricket, meanwhile, the fixture comes at a time when the sport’s presence in Japan is attracting greater attention.

The broadcast arrangements will therefore be important.

A professionally produced television or streaming presentation could significantly increase the visibility of the game and introduce Japanese cricket to viewers who may otherwise have little opportunity to watch the country’s national team.

Broadcast Deal Could Boost Japanese Cricket

For Japan, securing wider coverage of the match would be a major step forward.

Cricket remains a developing sport in the country, and exposure to a global powerhouse such as India can help increase interest among new audiences. A widely available broadcast could also benefit Japanese players and the country’s domestic cricket structure by giving the national team greater visibility.
