Sri Lanka is in shock following the shocking news of the brutal murder of Dhammika Niroshana, a former under-19 cricket team captain, who was found dead at his residence in Ambalangoda on Tuesday night. The 12-bore firearm-wielding assailant struck at a time when Niroshana was with his family, including his wife and two children.

The Kanda Mawatha residence, where the tragic incident took place, has been cordoned off by the police, who have launched an investigation into the killing. The authorities have sent the body for autopsy to determine the cause of death. As of now, no further details are available regarding the motive behind the murder.

Niroshana, a pace bowling all-rounder, was considered one of the finest talents to have emerged from Sri Lanka’s youth cricket system. During his playing days, he led a talented group of cricketers, including Farvez Maharoof, Angelo Mathews, and Upul Tharanga. Despite quitting cricket at the age of 20, Niroshana’s impressive record speaks volumes about his talent and potential.

In his relatively short cricket career, Dhammika played 12 first-class games and 8 List A matches for Galle Cricket Club between 2001 and 2004. He scored over 300 runs and picked up 19 wickets, showcasing his ability to contribute with both bat and ball.

Niroshana’s international career began when he made his debut for Sri Lanka’s U-19 side in 2000. He went on to feature in a handful of under-19 Tests and ODIs over the next two years. His tragic demise has sent shockwaves throughout the cricket fraternity in Sri Lanka, with fans and former teammates paying tribute to his promising career.
