Cricket is set to make its long-awaited return to the Olympic Games in 2028, with the English Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland in talks to field a men’s and women’s Team GB cricket team. The historic event marks the first time cricket has been included in the Olympics since 1900, with the ICC proposing six-team T20 tournaments for both the women’s and men’s competitions.
Cricket Scotland is keen to contribute players and staff to the proposed Team GB cricket teams, with the goal of having active involvement in their running. The ECB will be the teams’ nominated governing body, although details are yet to be confirmed. According to an ECB spokesperson,
“With the Los Angeles Olympics four years away, it’s very early stages, but we’re talking to Team GB and Cricket Scotland about the next steps we need to take.”
Andy Anson, chief executive of the British Olympic Association, has expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that the ECB will be at the centre of the team’s operation. He also mentioned that they will work closely with Cricket Scotland to ensure a smooth transition.
