Following Jos Buttler’s resignation as captain of the England One Day International (ODI) team, three strong candidates have emerged to take over the role. Each of them brings unique skills and qualities to the table: Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, and Ben Duckett.
1. Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes is widely seen as the top choice for the position. He is not only a powerful player but also has a rich history of success in international cricket. Stokes played a pivotal role in England’s triumph at the 2019 World Cup, earning the Player of the Match award in the final.
Although Stokes has been focused on Test cricket due to knee and hamstring problems, there is potential for him to lead the ODI team. His experience as a captain and his deep understanding of the game could help him recreate the magic he shared with coach Brendon McCullum during their transformation of the Test side.

2. Harry Brook
Harry Brook is another strong contender for the captaincy. As a middle-order batter, he has secured his place in both the 50-over and Twenty20 teams. Brook’s leadership skills were highlighted when he served as Buttler’s vice-captain in recent matches. He also captained the ODI team against Australia last summer.
Brook’s challenge may stem from a busy international schedule, especially as he is also a key player in Tests. Balancing his commitments might impact his availability for limited-overs games, but his potential makes him an exciting option for the captaincy.

3. Ben Duckett
Lastly, Ben Duckett has firmly established himself in the England white-ball setup, showcasing impressive skills across all formats. Since returning to the international scene in late 2022, Duckett has maintained a strong batting average in ODIs. He has also started to find his form in T20s.
Duckett’s ability to perform under pressure, highlighted by his significant contributions in ICC matches, makes him a respected candidate. Like Stokes and Brook, however, managing his workload will be essential if he takes on the captaincy.
With the departure of Buttler, England has three excellent options to consider for the next ODI captain. Each candidate brings special qualities and experiences that could lead the team to success in future tournaments.
