The anticipation for Asia Cup 2025 is reaching new heights as the BCCI officially announced India’s squad on Tuesday. Led by captain Suryakumar Yadav and chairman (selection committee) Ajit Agarkar, the 15-member squad features some surprising inclusions and notable exclusions, setting the stage for a compelling campaign.

One of the biggest surprises was the elevation of Shubman Gill as India’s vice-captain, signaling his crucial role in the team’s plans. Gill, who was brought in at the last minute, replaces Yashasvi Jaiswal, who lost his spot due to the last-minute change.

Additionally, Shreyas Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL 2024 title, was omitted, marking a significant decision by selectors.

Despite some inexperience in the squad, such as Jitesh Sharma and Harshit Rana, the selection committee’s choices have dispelled rumors and clarified India’s strategy for Asia Cup 2025. The team’s probable playing XI for the opening match against UAE looks well-balanced and formidable.

India’s Playing XI for Asia Cup 2025

Openers: Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma

Sanju Samson, who opened for India post-T20 World Cup 2024, is likely to partner with Abhishek Sharma in Asia Cup 2025, whose IPL form has been scintillating. Possibly, Samson and Abhishek Sharma will open the batting.

Middle Order: Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav

With Shubman Gill named vice-captain, he is expected to feature in the middle order, possibly at number 3.

Tilak Varma, in exceptional form during recent T20I internationals, may bat at number 5, providing stability and firepower. Suryakumar Yadav, who has been effective batting at number 4, will likely continue in that role in Asia Cup 2025, especially considering his IPL success at number 3.

All-rounders: Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel

Hardik Pandya, a key all-rounder, is a guaranteed starter, offering both batting depth and bowling options. Axar Patel, the primary spin-bowling all-rounder, will play a vital role given the dry UAE conditions.

Bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy

Jasprit Bumrah remains India’s premier fast bowler, while Arshdeep Singh’s impressive wicket-taking ability secures his spot. Varun Chakravarthy, who performed well in ICC Champions Trophy 2025, rounds out the bowling attack, supported by spin option of Axar Patel.
