BCB

Bangladesh cricket has once again found itself at the center of an administrative controversy after former Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul reportedly urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to suspend financial assistance to the board. The move has added another layer of uncertainty to an already turbulent period for cricket administration in the country.

According to reports, Aminul has questioned the legitimacy of the current Bangladesh Cricket Board and has appealed to the ICC to withhold funding until the governance dispute is resolved. He has also requested that he be reinstated as BCB president, arguing that the current leadership lacks legal standing.

The development has triggered discussions within Bangladesh cricket circles, with the BCB already responding to the ICC after consulting its legal team.

Aminul Questions the Legality of the Current BCB

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Aminul submitted a detailed letter, reportedly spanning nearly 14 pages, to the ICC earlier this week.

In the letter, the former BCB chief is understood to have challenged the legality of the present board while requesting the world governing body to halt all financial support to Bangladesh Cricket Board operations.

ICC funding plays a vital role in supporting cricket administration, infrastructure development, grassroots programs, and domestic competitions in Bangladesh. Any interruption in that funding could have significant consequences for the functioning of the board.

Besides seeking a funding freeze, Aminul has also asked to be reinstated as president, claiming that the existing administration should not continue under the present circumstances.

BCB Responds After ICC Notification

The Bangladesh Cricket Board was reportedly informed by the ICC about Aminul’s communication shortly after receiving the letter.

According to sources, the BCB discussed the matter extensively with its legal advisors before preparing an official response to the ICC.

Board officials have so far refrained from making detailed public comments regarding the contents of the letter, but the quick response indicates that the administration considers the issue significant.

Aminul himself has not publicly commented on the reports. Attempts to contact him for clarification were unsuccessful, and he has not responded to media queries regarding his position.

How the Leadership Crisis Began

The roots of the current dispute date back to April, when Bangladesh’s National Sports Council (NSC) dissolved the Aminul-led Bangladesh Cricket Board.

The decision followed an investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding the previous board elections. Based on the findings of the probe committee, the NSC concluded that widespread irregularities had occurred and decided to remove the existing administration.

On the same day, former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal was appointed chairman of an 11-member ad hoc committee.

The committee was assigned the responsibility of conducting fresh elections within 90 days to restore normal governance.

Tamim Iqbal Elected BCB President

Fresh elections were eventually held on June 7, resulting in Tamim Iqbal being elected unopposed as the new Bangladesh Cricket Board president for a four-year term.

The election marked a significant transition in Bangladesh cricket administration, with Tamim moving from his distinguished playing career into one of the country’s most influential sporting leadership roles.

The new administration has since begun focusing on stabilizing the board following months of uncertainty.

However, Aminul’s latest appeal to the ICC suggests that the leadership dispute remains far from over.

Corruption Allegations Led to Aminul’s Removal

Aminul’s removal followed allegations of corruption and governance failures that emerged after Bangladesh’s general elections earlier this year.

The National Sports Council relied on the findings of its investigative committee before deciding to dissolve the previous board.

The investigation itself was initiated after Tamim Iqbal and several cricket stakeholders requested a formal inquiry into the conduct of the previous BCB elections.

Reports indicated that around 50 of the 76 affiliated cricket clubs in Dhaka supported calls for an independent investigation.

Following the committee’s findings, the NSC concluded that significant irregularities had taken place and subsequently replaced the existing administration.

Aminul’s Brief Presidency

Aminul became Bangladesh Cricket Board president on May 30, 2025, after the National Sports Council removed Faruque Ahmed as its appointed councillor.

That decision also resulted in Faruque losing the BCB presidency.

Faruque himself had only taken charge in August 2024 following the departure of long-serving president Nazmul Hasan during Bangladesh’s political upheaval.

The rapid succession of leadership changes has highlighted the instability that has affected Bangladesh cricket administration over the past two years.

From ICC Official to BCB President

Before returning to Bangladesh, Aminul was serving as a development officer with the International Cricket Council.

He accepted the invitation to return to Bangladesh with the primary objective of overseeing transparent elections and strengthening cricket governance.

Initially, Aminul intended to resume his ICC responsibilities after the elections were completed.

However, he later decided to remain involved in Bangladesh cricket, stating that he wanted to finish the reforms he had started before stepping away.

Those ambitions were cut short after the corruption allegations and subsequent decision by the National Sports Council to remove him from office.

ICC Funding Holds Key Importance

The request to freeze ICC funding carries potentially serious implications.

Financial assistance from the ICC is essential for the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s day-to-day operations. The funding supports domestic tournaments, player development pathways, coaching education, infrastructure projects, women’s cricket, and grassroots initiatives across the country.

A prolonged suspension of financial support could disrupt several ongoing cricket programs and delay future development projects.

For that reason, any decision by the ICC will likely be made only after carefully reviewing legal submissions from all concerned parties.

Fresh Challenge for Bangladesh Cricket

The latest dispute comes at a time when Bangladesh cricket is attempting to rebuild stability both on and off the field.

While Tamim Iqbal’s appointment was expected to usher in a new administrative era, Aminul’s appeal to the ICC has reopened questions surrounding governance and legitimacy.

Whether the ICC chooses to take any action remains uncertain, but the situation is likely to remain under close scrutiny in the coming weeks.

For Bangladesh cricket, maintaining institutional stability will be just as important as performances on the field. As administrators await the ICC’s response, players, officials, and supporters will hope that the focus can soon return to cricket rather than boardroom disputes.
