Ajit Agarkar’s absence from a crucial BCCI review meeting in Mumbai has triggered fresh speculation about the future of India’s selection committee chairman. The former India all-rounder was not present at Thursday’s high-profile meeting, despite it being held in his home city, leading to questions about whether there is more to his absence than meets the eye.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), however, was quick to dismiss any speculation surrounding Agarkar’s position. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained that the meeting had been arranged at very short notice and that Agarkar was travelling outside Mumbai at the time.

According to Saikia, Agarkar was also in a location where joining the meeting virtually was not possible. The BCCI secretary stressed that attempts were made to connect the chairman of selectors online, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

“Today, he was out of station, so he could not be a part of the meeting,” Saikia said, explaining the circumstances behind Agarkar’s absence.
