If there’s one thing that strikes you about Hardik Pandya these days, it’s his clarity of thought. He will lead India for the first time in an ODI against Australia at the Wankhede Stadium.

At the press conference on the eve of the match day, Pandya was asked whether he would return to Test cricket for India in the World Test Championship final against Australia. Pandya’s response was clear. Hardik said, it would not be ethical for him to take someone’s place in the Test.

During the press conference, Hardik said, “No. I am a morally very strong person. I have not worked even 10 per cent to reach there. So it would not be morally right for me to come there and take someone’s place. If I want to play Test cricket, I will work hard and earn my place. So, because of this, I will not be available for the WTC final or future Test series until I feel I have earned my place.”

Shreyas Iyer’s injury is a concern

He admitted that middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer’s recurring back injury is a matter of deep concern for India just months before the ODI World Cup. He said India would need to find a solution if he will not available. Hardik did not believe that in the absence of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan would open the batting with Shubman Gill.

Difference of plans in ODIs and T20s

It should be noted that he has captained India in 11 T20I matches, winning 7 of them. Analyzing the difference in captaincy in different formats, Pandya said, “ODIs, T20s is an extension of the game, in which you have to make a lot of changes. You have to be in it because every over, every ball changes the game. You have more set plans in ODIs. Once you start something, the same plan can go on for 6 overs.”
