Female sport athletes have always been appreciated by one and all. However, The highest grade for Indian Women has a retainer of Rs 50 lakh while the lowest grade for Men is worth Rs 1 crore. Female cricketers in India find themselves at a disadvantage when they compare themselves to their male counterparts. This is because they deliever the same skills. However, they don’t earn as much as what the men do. So why aren’t female cricketers paid less as compared to male cricketers? 1) Revenue:
Men’s cricket generates much more revenue than women’s cricket so they are paid more. Revenue plays a major role in deciding the salaries of cricketers. People often fail to understand that BCCI indulges itself in business and at the end of the day, thus revenue comes into play while deciding the salaries. You get a portion of the value of revenue you create. This is why men’s cricket earns so much. Thus, blaming BCCI wouldn’t be right as Men’s cricket generates more revenue as compared to Women’s cricket.
2) Popularity:
At the end of the day, it is the popularity that matters. Men’s cricket tends to attract more crowd. People go to watch them play in the stadiums and spend money to watch their favorite players play. Unfortunately Male cricketers are more famous than female cricketers and thus, the popularity factor comes in to play. When Kohli, Dhoni and Rohit play, people throng the stadiums and crowd the couch to watch the matches on TV. But come women’s cricket, people are in general less interested, due to various reasons. Advertising and marketing plays a major role in this. The “Superstar” status given to Male cricketers is what results in them getting a higher salary as compared to female cricketers.
3) Regularity:
Regularity is one of the major reasons for the pay gap. Men’s cricket is played more often as compared to Women’ cricket. We regularly get to see the “Men In Blue” on the field. However, we don’t get to see female cricketers as often as male cricketers. One can’t really blame them as it is the BCCI and ICC which arranges the schedule. All of this us ultimately tied up with the revenue. More popularity generates more revenue and more revenue generates more salary. Despite the fact that Women’s cricket has gained more popularity over the last few years, it still doesn’t seem enough to reduce the pay gap between make cricketers and female cricketers.
