Delhi Capitals have appointed veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra as their spin bowling coach ahead of IPL 2027, adding another experienced former cricketer to their revamped coaching staff. Mishra returns to the franchise where he began his IPL journey, joining a backroom team that has undergone significant changes ahead of the upcoming season.
The appointment follows the arrival of several prominent names, including Sourav Ganguly as head coach, Yuvraj Singh as assistant coach and Chaminda Vaas as fast bowling coach. Mishra will now be responsible for guiding the franchise’s spinners and helping them prepare for the challenges of the tournament.
Mishra Reunites With His Former IPL Team
Mishra has a long association with Delhi, having represented the franchise during its Delhi Daredevils days. He featured in 162 IPL matches across 16 seasons, beginning with the inaugural edition in 2008, and spent 10 seasons with the Delhi-based side.
His familiarity with the franchise could prove valuable as he transitions into a coaching role. Having experienced the demands of the IPL from a player’s perspective for more than a decade, Mishra brings extensive knowledge of the tournament’s conditions, strategies and pressure situations.
The leg-spinner last played in the IPL in 2024 and finished his career with an impressive record of 174 wickets. His best bowling figures in the competition were 5 for 17, underlining his ability to deliver match-winning performances.
Three IPL Hat-Tricks Make Mishra Unique
One of Mishra’s most remarkable achievements is his record of three hat-tricks in IPL history, with each coming for a different franchise.
He first achieved the feat for Delhi Daredevils in 2008, followed by another hat-trick for Deccan Chargers in 2011. His third came while representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013.
Mishra remains the only player to have taken three hat-tricks in the tournament, a record that highlights his longevity and impact as a specialist bowler.
Interestingly, his new colleague Yuvraj Singh is among the players to have recorded two IPL hat-tricks, achieving the feat in 2009. The presence of both former players on the coaching staff adds further IPL experience to Delhi Capitals’ setup.

Zeeshan Ansari and Young Spinners Could Benefit
Mishra’s appointment could be particularly useful for Delhi Capitals’ emerging spin options. Zeeshan Ansari, who recently joined the franchise through a trade deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad, stands to benefit from working with an experienced leg-spinner.
The trade saw T Natarajan move to Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Ansari joined Delhi Capitals. Mishra’s guidance could help the young spinner refine his skills, improve his tactical awareness and adapt to the demands of the IPL.
Leg-spinners Vipraj Nigam and Rehan Ahmed could also benefit from his experience if Delhi Capitals retain them for the 2027 season.
Delhi Capitals Strengthen Coaching Team
With Ganguly, Yuvraj, Vaas and Amit now part of the coaching setup, Delhi Capitals are bringing together considerable experience across different areas of the game.
Mishra’s primary focus will be on developing the team’s spin-bowling resources, sharing his knowledge of variations and helping bowlers understand how to operate in different match situations.
As Delhi Capitals prepare for IPL 2027, the appointment marks a return to familiar territory for Mishra, who will now look to make an impact from the dugout after years of contributing with the ball.
