powar

The BCCI has formally appointed former India spinner Ramesh Powar to its senior men’s selection committee, with Pragyan Ojha set to lead the panel as chairman. Powar replaces outgoing chairman Ajit Agarkar, bringing his international cricket experience and coaching background to the selection process.

As previously reported by Cricketkeeda, Ojha will take charge of the committee based on seniority, determined by the number of Test matches played. The former India left-arm spinner had been heading the panel on an interim basis before the latest appointment.

Cricket Advisory Committee Conducts Selection Process

The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, oversaw the selection process. The committee conducted interviews at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, assessing candidates for the position.

Powar was unanimously selected following the process. The interviews took place on October 15, with several former cricketers considered for the role.

According to reports, candidates interviewed for the position included Connor Williams and Jacob Martin from Baroda, along with Mumbai’s Wasim Jaffer and Salil Ankola.

Powar Brings International and Coaching Experience

Powar represented India between 2004 and 2007, featuring in two Test matches and 31 One-Day Internationals. Following his playing career, he moved into coaching and held several roles, including head coach of the India women’s cricket team.

His appointment adds a former international cricketer with coaching experience to the selection setup as the BCCI prepares for upcoming assignments and future team-building decisions.

The selection committee plays a key role in choosing India’s squads across formats, assessing player performances, identifying emerging talent and planning for major international tournaments.

BCCI Acknowledges Agarkar’s Contribution

The BCCI also expressed its appreciation for Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman, recognising his “commitment, conviction and contribution” to Indian cricket.

During his time in the role, Indian teams secured three ICC titles, two Asia Cup trophies and two gold medals at the Asian Games, according to the board’s statement.

With Agarkar’s tenure coming to an end, the reconstituted committee will now take responsibility for India’s senior men’s selection decisions.
