Delhi Capitals (DC) have appointed former Sri Lankan all-rounder Chaminda Vaas as their fast bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The appointment marks Vaas’s first coaching assignment in the Indian Premier League, as the franchise continues to reshape its support staff for the upcoming campaign.
Vaas will join a revamped coaching setup led by head coach Sourav Ganguly. Earlier this week, Delhi Capitals also appointed former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as their assistant and batting coach. Vaas replaces Munaf Patel, who served as the franchise’s bowling coach over the previous two seasons.
The appointments underline Delhi Capitals’ efforts to strengthen their coaching group with experienced international cricketers as they prepare for another IPL campaign.
Vaas Brings an Impressive International Record
Vaas, 52, was one of Sri Lanka’s most successful fast bowlers and enjoyed a distinguished international career across Tests and One-Day Internationals. He claimed 355 wickets in Test cricket and 400 in ODIs, establishing himself as a key figure in Sri Lanka’s bowling attack.
Known for his left-arm pace, swing and ability to trouble batters with the new ball, Vaas brings extensive experience to the Capitals’ coaching staff. His understanding of fast bowling across different conditions could prove valuable in helping the franchise’s pace attack prepare for the demands of the IPL.
His appointment also represents a new chapter in his coaching career, with the former Sri Lankan international now set to work in one of the world’s most competitive franchise T20 tournaments.

Previous Coaching Stints with Sri Lanka and New Zealand
Vaas has previously worked with Sri Lanka’s men’s national team as a bowling coach during three separate stints. His coaching journey began with a short-term assignment with New Zealand before he took up the role with Sri Lanka from 2013 to 2015.
In 2016, he was appointed Ireland’s bowling coach for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He subsequently returned to the Sri Lankan setup, continuing his involvement in developing international bowlers.
These assignments have given Vaas experience working with fast bowlers at the highest level, preparing them for international competition and helping teams adapt their strategies to different playing conditions.
His move to Delhi Capitals will now provide him with an opportunity to apply that experience in the IPL, where bowling units must regularly adjust to different pitches, batting line-ups and match situations.
Vaas Also Has IPL Playing Experience
Although the 2027 season will mark his first IPL coaching stint, Vaas is familiar with the tournament as a former player. He represented the Deccan Chargers between 2008 and 2010, taking 18 wickets in 13 matches for the franchise.
His experience as an IPL player could help him understand the demands placed on bowlers in the competition, particularly the need to combine control and variation in a format dominated by aggressive batting.
With Sourav Ganguly leading the coaching group and Yuvraj Singh also joining the staff, Delhi Capitals are assembling a backroom team featuring several former international stars.
Vaas’s appointment adds specialist fast-bowling expertise to that group. The franchise will hope the combination of coaching experience and international knowledge helps its bowlers deliver more consistent performances throughout IPL 2027.
