India have added veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar to their squad for the fifth and final T20I against West Indies following an injury concern involving Arshdeep Singh. The decision comes ahead of the series decider, scheduled to take place at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on October 17.
Arshdeep sustained a blow to his left shoulder while batting during the fourth T20I in Hyderabad. The left-arm pacer retired hurt after facing one more delivery, as West Indies secured a victory to level the five-match series 2-2.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not clarified whether Bhuvneshwar’s inclusion is purely precautionary. Arshdeep remains part of the squad, but the board stated that his availability for the final match will depend on his recovery.
With the series level, India’s pace-bowling options will be closely watched as the team prepares for the decisive encounter.
Bhuvneshwar Gets Another Opportunity
Bhuvneshwar’s return marks a significant development for the experienced seamer, who had been out of favour with the national selectors for nearly four years. His last international appearance came against New Zealand in Napier in November 2022.
The 36-year-old has strengthened his case for a comeback through impressive performances in the Indian Premier League. He was part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title-winning campaigns, and his experience could prove valuable as India look to secure the series against West Indies.
Known for his swing bowling, control in the powerplay and ability to deliver under pressure, Bhuvneshwar offers India an experienced option in the pace department. His potential involvement in the fifth T20I would also provide an opportunity to assess his readiness for international cricket after an extended absence.
Although the BCCI has not confirmed whether he will feature in the playing XI, his addition gives the team another experienced fast-bowling option ahead of the series finale.

Return Comes Ahead of New Zealand Tour
Bhuvneshwar’s inclusion is particularly noteworthy because he has also been selected for India’s upcoming T20I tour of New Zealand, which begins on October 22.
The back-to-back opportunities suggest that the selectors are considering the veteran pacer for India’s immediate T20I plans. His performances in the IPL appear to have strengthened his position, although his role in the national side will depend on team requirements and his form.
For India, the upcoming matches will provide an opportunity to evaluate their bowling combinations ahead of the next phase of the international calendar.
India Prepare for a Series Decider
The fourth T20I defeat allowed West Indies to draw level at 2-2, setting up a high-stakes final match in Bengaluru. India will now aim to finish the series with a victory, while the visitors will look to complete a comeback.
Arshdeep’s recovery will be a key factor in India’s selection plans. If he is unavailable, Bhuvneshwar could come into contention for a place in the playing XI, bringing experience and swing to the attack.
India’s updated squad includes Shreyas Iyer as captain, Tilak Varma as vice-captain, and players such as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi.
With the series on the line and uncertainty surrounding Arshdeep’s fitness, Bhuvneshwar’s return adds an important selection dimension to the final T20I. The veteran pacer will be hoping to make the most of this opportunity as India prepare for the decisive clash against West Indies.
