Bhuvneshwar Kumar has made a surprise return to India’s T20I setup after being named in the squad for the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand. The senior selection committee has recalled the experienced 36-year-old pacer Bhuvneshwar following two impressive seasons in the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Bhuvneshwar’s return comes almost four years after his last appearance for India. Interestingly, his most recent international match was also played in New Zealand, where Bhuvneshwar featured in November 2022 shortly after the T20 World Cup.
Bhuvneshwar’s performances in the IPL appear to have played a major role in his comeback. The 2026 season was particularly productive for the veteran seamer, who finished with 28 wickets at an excellent economy rate of 7.95. His ability to control the new ball and deliver effectively at the death has once again brought him into consideration for the national side.
Bhuvneshwar Makes Comeback
India have named a 16-member squad for the five-match T20I series, with Shreyas Iyer set to lead the side. Tilak Varma has been appointed vice-captain, while Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan provide wicketkeeping options.
The squad includes several familiar faces from India’s recent T20I campaigns, along with a few players looking to strengthen their claims ahead of the next major international cycle.
India’s T20I squad: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav.
One of the biggest talking points is the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. The premier fast bowler has not been included in the T20I squad, with his workload likely being managed ahead of the two-Test series against New Zealand later in the tour.
With two Tests also scheduled, India will need to carefully balance their fast-bowling resources. Bhuvneshwar’s experience could therefore prove valuable during the T20I leg of the tour.
Varun Chakaravarthy Returns
Mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has also been recalled to the T20I squad. The 35-year-old had endured an injury-disrupted 2026 and was last seen in international action during India’s T20I against Afghanistan in Delhi.
Chakaravarthy suffered a side strain during that match, which subsequently forced him to miss the one-off T20I against Japan and the Asian Games. His return comes at the expense of Ravi Bishnoi.
The spinner remains an important part of India’s plans in the shortest format because of his variations and ability to trouble batters in the middle overs. His return gives India another experienced spin option alongside Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel.
New Zealand Tour Begins on October 22
India’s tour of New Zealand will begin on October 22, with the first T20I scheduled at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The five-match series will be followed by the much-anticipated Test contests.
While the T20I squad has been announced with a mix of experienced players and younger options, the selectors have simultaneously begun preparing for the Test leg of the tour.

Strong India A Squad Named
The selectors have also announced a 15-member India A squad for three multi-day matches against New Zealand A. The squad includes several players who are either established Test names or are being considered for the senior Test team.
Bengal fast bowlers Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar are among the most notable selections. Both have recently produced strong performances in domestic cricket.
Akash Deep claimed six wickets in the recently completed Irani Cup, while Mukesh Kumar returned an impressive eight-wicket haul in Rest of India’s 167-run victory.
Their performances have strengthened their cases for inclusion in India’s plans for the upcoming New Zealand Tests. With the World Test Championship qualification race becoming increasingly important, the Indian management is expected to closely monitor the performances of its fast-bowling options.
The India A squad also contains several established Test players, including KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel and Manav Suthar.
Washington Sundar, who was recently withdrawn from India’s T20I squad against West Indies, has also been included. Rishabh Pant is part of the India A group as well, although his participation remains subject to fitness clearance.
Dhruv Jurel has been named captain of the India A side, with Pant and Jurel offering two wicketkeeping options.
India A Matches Ahead of Test Series
The three India A matches against New Zealand A are scheduled to begin on October 27, November 3 and November 10. The games will be played across Lincoln and Christchurch.
These fixtures are expected to serve as an important preparation opportunity for players pushing for Test selection. They will also allow the team management to assess the fitness and match readiness of several players before the senior side begins its Test campaign.
India A squad: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Ravichandran Smaran, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper)*, Dhruv Jurel (captain, wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Auqib Nabi, Akash Deep, Anshul Kamboj, Manav Suthar, Mukesh Choudhary, Sai Sudharsan, Yash Rathod and Mukesh Kumar.
The first Test between India and New Zealand is scheduled to begin on November 19 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
For Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the New Zealand tour represents an unexpected opportunity to revive his international career. His comeback, backed by strong IPL numbers, will be one of the major storylines when India begin their T20I series in Christchurch.
