GANGULY

Sourav Ganguly has returned to the Delhi Capitals (DC) dugout, with the former India captain appointed as the franchise’s new head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Ganguly replaces Hemang Badani, who was in charge of the team for the previous two seasons.

The appointment marks another significant chapter in Ganguly’s long association with the Delhi Capitals franchise. Having worked with the organisation in several different capacities over the years, he will now take on his biggest role yet as the team’s head coach.

Ganguly joined the franchise in 2019 as an advisor. His involvement later expanded after his tenure as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India ended, with the former India captain becoming Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams.

More recently, Ganguly took up the head coach’s position at Pretoria Capitals in the SA20. He guided the South African franchise to the final earlier this year, adding coaching experience in another major T20 league to his resume.

Ganguly Returns to Familiar Territory

The new role brings Ganguly back to a franchise he already knows extremely well.

His years with Delhi Capitals have given him an understanding of the team’s management, ownership structure, players and support staff. That familiarity could help him settle into the head coach position without the adjustment period that often comes with a new appointment.

Ganguly said he was excited about taking on the responsibility and described Delhi Capitals as a franchise that is particularly close to him.

He also pointed to his long-standing relationship with the owners, management and players as an important factor behind his enthusiasm for the new role.

The former India captain believes the squad has considerable talent and wants to build a team capable of playing an aggressive and fearless brand of cricket.

His immediate objective will be clear: turn Delhi Capitals into genuine IPL title contenders.

Delhi Still Searching for First IPL Title

Delhi Capitals remain one of the original IPL franchises yet to win the tournament.

Only Delhi and Punjab Kings have failed to lift the IPL trophy since the competition began. Delhi came closest in 2020, when they reached their first IPL final but ultimately finished runners-up.

The team produced another strong league campaign the following year, finishing at the top of the points table. However, they could not make it to the final.

Since then, Delhi’s performances have declined.

The franchise has not reached the playoffs since the 2021 season. Last year, the team finished sixth under the leadership combination of captain Axar Patel and head coach Hemang Badani.

That lack of sustained success has increased the pressure on the franchise to find the right combination both on and off the field.

Ganguly now gets the opportunity to change that trajectory.

A New Era Under Ganguly

The appointment represents a fresh start for Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2027.

Ganguly’s leadership experience is one of the biggest factors behind the move. As India’s former captain, he was known for building competitive teams and backing young players.

His administrative experience as BCCI president and his previous work within the Delhi Capitals organisation have also given him an understanding of the wider demands of professional cricket.

However, coaching an IPL franchise presents a different challenge.

Ganguly will have to manage a squad of international and domestic players, work alongside support staff, deal with auction strategies and make tactical decisions during a highly competitive tournament.

His recent experience with Pretoria Capitals should help him in that regard.

Pretoria Capitals Experience

Ganguly’s most recent coaching assignment came in the SA20, where he served as head coach of Pretoria Capitals.

He guided the side to the final earlier this year, giving him valuable experience of managing a T20 franchise from the coaching box.

That campaign will provide useful lessons as he prepares to return to the IPL.

The two leagues have different conditions and player pools, but the fundamental demands of franchise cricket remain similar: squad management, tactical flexibility, player roles and maintaining consistency throughout a long tournament.

Ganguly will now look to bring those lessons to Delhi.

JSW Sports Welcomes Ganguly

Delhi Capitals operate under a split ownership model, with JSW Sports set to manage the franchise for the next two years.

JSW Sports founder Parth Jindal welcomed Ganguly’s appointment and described him as an integral part of the Delhi Capitals family.

Jindal expressed confidence that Ganguly’s leadership and vision could help the franchise mount a stronger challenge for the IPL trophy.

The backing from the ownership group will be important as Ganguly begins restructuring the team’s coaching setup and planning for the next season.

Retentions Are the First Challenge

Ganguly’s first major task will arrive well before the IPL 2027 season begins.

The new head coach will need to work with the franchise to finalise the squad’s retention plans ahead of the November 15 deadline.

Deciding which players should remain at the franchise will be crucial because the retention list will shape Delhi’s strategy for the mini auction.

The auction itself is scheduled to take place in mid-December in Goa.

Ganguly and the management team will therefore have only a limited window to assess the existing squad, identify weaknesses and determine which positions need strengthening.

The franchise will need to strike a balance between retaining established players and creating room for new additions.

Building a Fearless Delhi Capitals

One of Ganguly’s stated ambitions is to build a strong and fearless team.

That approach could influence the way Delhi Capitals structure their squad for IPL 2027.

The franchise has had talented players in recent seasons but has struggled to maintain consistency. Ganguly will be expected to create clearer roles and ensure the team has enough depth to handle injuries, workload management and changes in form.

His understanding of the franchise could prove valuable in this process.

He has already worked closely with the Delhi Capitals organisation for several years, meaning he is familiar with the team’s long-term ambitions.

Can Ganguly End Delhi’s Trophy Wait?

The biggest question surrounding Ganguly’s appointment is whether he can finally help Delhi Capitals win their maiden IPL title.

The franchise has reached the final once and topped the league table but has failed to convert those strong campaigns into a championship.

The absence from the playoffs since 2021 has made a turnaround even more important.

Ganguly’s appointment brings experience, familiarity and a fresh coaching perspective. His challenge will now be to convert those advantages into results.

With the retention deadline approaching and the mini auction scheduled for December, his work will begin almost immediately.

Delhi Capitals have chosen a coach who already understands the franchise from the inside. Ganguly now has the opportunity to use that knowledge to build a team capable of challenging for the title.

For a franchise that has spent years searching for its first IPL trophy, IPL 2027 could represent the beginning of a new era under one of India’s most influential cricketing figures.
