Former Australia international David Boon will take over as Cricket Australia’s interim chair from October 28, following Mike Baird’s decision to step down from the position at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting.

Baird, who has been part of the Cricket Australia Board for six years and has served as chair since February 2023, has informed the board that he will not seek another term. His tenure will officially come to an end following the AGM.

Boon, who joined the Cricket Australia Board in February 2025, will oversee the organisation during the transition period while the search for a permanent chair gets underway.

Boon Set to Lead CA During Transition

Boon brings extensive experience from both cricket administration and his playing career. Before joining the Cricket Australia Board, he spent nine years as a director on the Cricket Tasmania Board, including three years as its chair.

The former Australia batter has also held several important positions within the game. He served as Cricket Tasmania’s General Manager of Cricket and was a member of the Australian Selection Panel between 2000 and 2011.

Boon later served as an ICC Match Referee, adding international administrative experience to his cricket background.

Speaking about his new responsibility, Boon said he was honoured to take on the interim role at an important stage for Australian cricket. He also highlighted the need to make decisions that support the long-term development of the game in Australia while continuing to advance the country’s interests internationally.

Boon Thanks Mike Baird for His Leadership

Boon also paid tribute to outgoing chair Mike Baird, acknowledging his contribution to Australian cricket during his time on the CA Board.

Boon praised Baird for his involvement across different levels of the game, from grassroots cricket to the Cricket Australia and ICC boardrooms. He also recognised the difficult decisions Baird had been required to make during his time as chair.

According to Boon, Baird’s commitment to Australian cricket and his contribution to the game’s administration deserved recognition across the cricket community.

Baird joined the CA Board six years ago and became chair in February 2023. His departure now brings an end to a period in which he was involved in several significant decisions concerning Australian cricket.

Permanent Chair Search to Begin

Cricket Australia has confirmed that the process to appoint a permanent chair will begin in the months following the AGM.

Boon’s appointment is therefore intended to provide continuity while the formal selection process takes place. The interim chair will lead the board during this period before a permanent successor is appointed.

Baird said he was pleased that Boon had agreed to take responsibility during the transition. He also confirmed that he would work with Boon over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth handover.

The transition will allow Cricket Australia to maintain stability while it conducts the search for its next permanent chair.

Baird Reflects on Six Years With CA Board

Reflecting on his time with Cricket Australia, Baird said he was proud to have contributed to the administration of Australian cricket.

His involvement included time on the CNSW Board before joining the Cricket Australia Board, where he spent six years, including almost four years as chair.

Baird also thanked the people who contribute to Australian cricket at different levels, particularly supporters, volunteers, club players and umpires.

He pointed to several indicators of growth during his tenure, saying Cricket Australia was on course to report record revenue, profit, attendance and viewership this year. He also highlighted a 40% increase in participation over the previous four years.

Baird further referenced recent decisions concerning the Big Bash League, saying he believed those measures had strengthened the competition’s long-term sustainability.

Praise for Australian Players and Leadership

Baird also acknowledged the contribution of Australia’s players and captains during his time at the helm.

He specifically mentioned Pat Cummins, Mitch Marsh, Alyssa Healy and Sophie Molineux, praising their performances and the example they have provided for younger generations.

According to Baird, the Australian teams have demonstrated qualities beyond their results on the field, particularly through their leadership and character.

He also expressed confidence in the current Cricket Australia Board, pointing to the experience and commitment of its members as important strengths for the organisation going forward.

Todd Greenberg Also Receives Praise

Baird reserved particular praise for Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg, thanking him for his work during their time working together.

Baird described Greenberg as an outstanding sports administrator and said he believed the CEO would continue to play an important role in establishing a strong future for Australian cricket.

With Baird stepping down after the AGM, Boon will now take responsibility for guiding the board through the next phase.

The former Australia international brings a combination of playing experience, selection knowledge and administrative expertise to the interim position. His task will be to maintain continuity while Cricket Australia begins the process of identifying its next permanent chair.

The transition will formally begin on October 28, with the permanent appointment expected to follow after Cricket Australia completes its selection process.
