Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have appointed former India left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their head coach for IPL 2027, marking a major change in the franchise’s coaching setup.

Zaheer will take over from Stephen Fleming, who brought an 18-year association with CSK to an end before moving into a new role with England cricket. Fleming had been one of the most important figures in CSK’s coaching structure and played a key role in shaping the franchise over several seasons.

The appointment of Zaheer signals a new chapter for the five-time IPL champions as they look to build on their strong cricketing culture while placing greater emphasis on developing young players.

Zaheer Khan Replaces Stephen Fleming

Fleming’s departure represents a significant change for CSK. The former New Zealand captain had been associated with the franchise for 18 years, primarily serving as the head of its coaching staff.

After leaving CSK, Fleming moved into English cricket. In July, he was appointed as England men’s Test head coach, taking on a major international coaching responsibility.

CSK have now turned to Zaheer, whose experience as an international cricketer and mentor makes him a natural fit for a franchise that has traditionally placed considerable importance on experience and player development.

Ahead of the 2019 IPL season, Zaheer was appointed Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket Operations. He later took on the responsibility of head of global development, giving him extensive experience in identifying and nurturing cricketing talent.

His most recent IPL-related assignment came with Lucknow Super Giants, where he was appointed as a mentor for the 2025 season. However, his association with the franchise ended before the following season.

His experience across different roles means Zaheer enters the CSK setup with an understanding of both the playing and administrative sides of professional cricket.

Zaheer brings considerable experience from his own playing days.

The left-arm pacer played 100 IPL matches, taking 102 wickets at an average of 27.27. His ability to swing the ball, use variations effectively and perform under pressure made him one of India’s most respected fast bowlers during his international career.

At the international level, Zaheer collected 610 wickets across formats for India.

He was an important member of the Indian team during the 2000s and played a major role in the development of India’s fast-bowling attack during that period. His experience of playing international cricket at the highest level is expected to add considerable depth to CSK’s coaching setup.

CSK Managing Director KS Viswanathan highlighted Zaheer’s knowledge of the game and his contribution to developing young cricketers, particularly fast bowlers.

“Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years,” Viswanathan said.

He also pointed to Zaheer’s contribution to Indian cricket during his playing career, describing him as one of the key figures behind India’s success during the 2000s.

For CSK, Zaheer’s experience could be particularly valuable as the franchise continues to work with emerging players and build its squad for future IPL seasons.

She added that Khan’s distinguished career and experience nurturing young players would make him a valuable addition to the CSK setup.
