burger

South African fast bowler Nandre Burger has suffered another injury setback, with the left-arm pacer ruled out of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 after a recurrence of a stress reaction in his back. Texas Super Kings confirmed that the 30-year-old will leave the tournament and undergo an extended period of rest and rehabilitation after scans revealed the return of a pre-existing issue.

Burger’s absence is a significant blow for the Super Kings, who have already relied on his experience in the early stages of the tournament. South African batting all-rounder Dian Forrester has been named as his replacement.

Another Setback for Nandre Burger

Burger’s latest injury continues a frustrating pattern that has repeatedly interrupted his career. The left-arm quick featured in Texas Super Kings’ opening two matches of the season but was subsequently sidelined after experiencing discomfort.

Medical scans later confirmed the recurrence of a stress reaction in his back, forcing the franchise to make an immediate replacement. According to the team, Burger will now undergo a prolonged period of recovery and rehabilitation to ensure a complete return to fitness.

Back injuries have troubled Burger for several years, and the latest setback comes just when he appeared to have regained momentum after a successful IPL campaign.

Short-Lived MLC Campaign

Burger managed only two appearances for Texas Super Kings before his tournament came to an abrupt end.

He bowled his full quota in the opening game against Seattle Orcas and followed it up with another appearance against San Francisco Unicorns. During that match, Burger claimed the prized wicket of explosive New Zealand opener Finn Allen.

However, his outing lasted just two overs before he was taken out of the attack. By the time Texas Super Kings played their third match, New Zealand pacer Adam Milne had replaced him in the playing XI.

Subsequent medical assessments confirmed that Burger would take no further part in the competition.

Dian Forrester Called Up as Replacement

Texas Super Kings have moved quickly to reinforce their squad by signing fellow South African Dian Forrester.

Unlike Burger, Forrester is a batting all-rounder who offers useful seam-bowling options. The youngster made his international debut earlier this year against New Zealand and has already represented South Africa in five T20 Internationals.

In domestic T20 cricket, Forrester has built a reputation as an aggressive middle-order batter capable of scoring at a strike rate of around 140. He has also claimed 14 wickets in 39 T20 matches, making him a valuable dual-purpose player.

His association with the Super Kings family is already well established. He represented Joburg Super Kings during the SA20 2025-26 season and later joined Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026 as an injury replacement for England all-rounder Jamie Overton.

Most recently, Forrester toured England with South Africa A, gaining valuable experience in overseas conditions.

Long History of Injury Problems

Unfortunately for Burger, injuries have become an unfortunate theme throughout his career.

In October 2024, he was ruled out of South Africa’s series against Ireland, where he was expected to make his ODI debut. The same lumbar stress reaction also forced him to miss the Test series against Bangladesh and subsequently kept him out of the SA20 season.

Even before establishing himself internationally, Burger faced similar problems. In November 2021, a lower-back injury ended his domestic season and sidelined him for almost a year before he eventually returned to action for Western Province.

The recurring nature of the injury raises concerns about managing his workload and ensuring long-term fitness.

Hamstring Trouble Added to Frustrations

Burger’s injury troubles were not limited to his back.

Last December, he suffered a hamstring injury during South Africa’s ODI series against India. The issue affected his participation in the second ODI and ultimately ruled him out of the third match.

Despite that setback, Burger recovered in time to enjoy a productive IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals.

Strong IPL Season Offered Encouragement

Burger emerged as one of Rajasthan Royals’ more effective bowlers during IPL 2026.

He featured in 13 matches and picked up 14 wickets at an average of 31.42, finishing as the joint-second highest wicket-taker for the franchise. His pace and ability to extract bounce proved valuable throughout the campaign.

Interestingly, Burger had initially joined Rajasthan Royals last year as an injury replacement for Sandeep Sharma but did not play a single match. This season, however, he made the most of his opportunities and established himself as a key member of the bowling attack.

His performances had suggested that he was finally putting his injury concerns behind him, making this latest setback even more disappointing.

A Crucial Recovery Period Ahead

For Burger, the focus will now shift entirely to rehabilitation. Given his history with back injuries, South Africa’s medical staff and his franchises are likely to adopt a cautious approach rather than rushing him back into competitive cricket.

Fast bowlers place enormous strain on their bodies, and recurring stress reactions require careful management to prevent long-term damage.

At 30 years of age, Burger still has plenty to offer both South Africa and franchise teams around the world. However, maintaining fitness consistently will be critical if he is to maximize his potential.

Texas Super Kings Move Forward

While losing Burger is a setback, Texas Super Kings will hope that Dian Forrester’s arrival adds balance and depth to their squad.

Forrester now has a valuable opportunity to showcase his abilities on one of franchise cricket’s growing stages. Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Burger’s rehabilitation, with fans hoping that the talented left-arm pacer can once again overcome adversity and return stronger.

For now, another chapter in his injury battle begins, one that both player and supporters will hope ends with a successful comeback.
