The Board of Control for Cricket in India has unveiled a refreshed 15-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, and the spotlight firmly rests on two promising young cricketers—Kashvee Gautam and Anushka Sharma—who have received their maiden call-ups in the shortest format.
This series, scheduled to take place in April, holds added significance as it serves as a crucial preparatory platform ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England later this year. With competition for spots intensifying, India’s selection committee appears focused on building a balanced squad that blends experience with emerging talent.
New Faces Bring Fresh Energy to the Squad
The inclusion of Kashvee Gautam and Anushka Sharma signals a clear intent by selectors to reward consistent domestic and franchise-level performances. Both players have shown immense potential in recent seasons, particularly in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which has become a key pipeline for national selection.
Kashvee Gautam, a 22-year-old pace bowler, has steadily climbed the ranks with her disciplined bowling and ability to pick up wickets at crucial moments. Representing the Gujarat Giants, she has taken 19 wickets in 18 matches, demonstrating both consistency and control.
Her rise in Indian cricket has been swift yet well-earned. She made her ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2025 and recently featured in a Test match against Australia, showcasing her adaptability across formats. The T20I call-up now completes her entry into all three international formats, a significant milestone for any young cricketer.
Anushka Sharma, also 22, brings versatility as an all-rounder. She made a strong impression during the 2026 WPL season, scoring 177 runs in just seven matches for Gujarat Giants. Her aggressive batting style and ability to contribute with the ball make her a valuable asset in T20 cricket, where multi-dimensional players often prove decisive.
Her contributions to the India A team, including their success in the Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars tournament, further strengthened her case for national selection. This call-up is not just a reward but also an opportunity to transition her domestic success onto the international stage.
Uma Chetry Adds Depth Behind the Stumps
Another notable inclusion is Uma Chetry, a wicketkeeper-batter who has already represented India in T20Is. At 23, Chetry brings a mix of youth and experience, having played seven matches in the format.
Despite going unsold in the 2026 WPL auction, her consistent domestic performances have kept her in contention. Her presence alongside Richa Ghosh strengthens India’s wicketkeeping options and adds healthy competition within the squad.
Experienced Core Provides Stability
While new players have grabbed headlines, the backbone of the team remains intact. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana continue to lead the side, bringing invaluable experience and leadership.
The batting lineup is further reinforced by established names like Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues, both known for their ability to anchor innings as well as accelerate when needed.
In the all-round department, Deepti Sharma remains a key figure, offering balance with her contributions in both batting and bowling.

Notable Omissions Raise Eyebrows
The squad also features some surprising exclusions. Players like Sneh Rana, Amanjot Kaur, and others who were part of the recent series against Australia have been left out. While such decisions may seem unexpected, they reflect the selectors’ intention to experiment and evaluate different combinations ahead of the World Cup.
This rotation policy ensures that a wider pool of players gets exposure at the international level, ultimately strengthening squad depth.
