India moved one step closer to defending their T20 World Cup crown after defeating England in a thrilling high-scoring semifinal in Mumbai on March 5. In a match packed with big hits, momentum swings, and dramatic moments, India held their nerve to secure a narrow seven-run victory, booking their place in the final where New Zealand await.
The foundation for India’s win was laid by their explosive batting unit, spearheaded by Sanju Samson, who delivered a sensational knock of 89 runs off just 42 balls. His aggressive approach at the top helped India pile up a massive total of 253/7 in 20 overs, setting England a daunting target on a batting-friendly Wankhede surface.
India were asked to bat first and once again started aggressively in the Powerplay. Despite losing Abhishek Sharma early, the hosts managed to score 67 runs in the first six overs, putting immediate pressure on the English bowlers.
Abhishek struggled to get going and fell early while attempting to attack Will Jacks, mistiming a shot that was safely taken in the deep. England had another opportunity to strike soon after when Samson offered a chance on 15, but the dropped catch proved extremely costly.
Samson and Kishan Dominate the Middle Overs
After surviving the early scare, Samson shifted gears and began dismantling England’s bowling attack. He took advantage of the fielding restrictions and targeted the pace of Jofra Archer and the spin of Adil Rashid, striking boundaries with remarkable ease.
At the other end, Ishan Kishan provided excellent support, ensuring that India maintained the momentum. Kishan punished Jamie Overton and also attacked Liam Dawson, hitting boundaries and clearing the ropes to keep the scoreboard ticking rapidly.
The pair entertained the packed crowd at the Wankhede Stadium with their aggressive strokeplay before Rashid finally broke the partnership. Kishan miscued a shot and was caught at the halfway stage of the innings, giving England a much-needed breakthrough.
However, the dismissal did little to slow India down.
Late-Over Fireworks Push India Past 250
With Samson continuing his assault, India looked set for a massive total. The opener smashed multiple boundaries and sixes, bringing up another impressive half-century. His innings finally ended on 89 when he mistimed an attempt to clear the ropes off Will Jacks.
Even after Samson’s departure, India kept attacking. Shivam Dube played a quick cameo, smashing Rashid for two huge sixes, while Hardik Pandya finished the innings in style.
Pandya struck three boundaries off Overton before hammering two more sixes in the final over, helping India collect 63 runs in the last four overs. Meanwhile, Tilak Varma punished Archer’s erratic bowling by smashing three towering sixes.
India’s explosive finish ensured they crossed the 250-run mark, putting England under immense pressure ahead of their chase.
Bethell Leads England’s Fightback
England’s reply began poorly as Phil Salt fell early, giving Hardik Pandya the first breakthrough. Soon after, Jasprit Bumrah produced a brilliant slower ball to dismiss Harry Brook, with Axar Patel taking an excellent running catch.
Despite the early setbacks, Jacob Bethell launched a remarkable counterattack. The young batter played fearless cricket, taking on India’s bowlers with innovative strokeplay.
Bethell attacked Varun Chakaravarthy immediately, smashing three consecutive sixes to change the momentum of the match. However, Chakaravarthy responded by dismissing England captain Jos Buttler, ensuring India maintained control in the Powerplay.
England continued to fight back through Bethell and Will Jacks, who built an aggressive partnership to keep the chase alive. At the halfway stage, England had already reached 119 runs, keeping their hopes intact.
Death Bowling Seals India’s Victory
As the match progressed, the pressure slowly mounted on England. Bethell continued to dominate the Indian attack, frequently switching his stance and finding boundaries with ease. Jacks also played aggressively, and for a moment it appeared that England might pull off an incredible chase.
However, India’s bowlers stepped up at crucial moments.
Axar Patel produced a key breakthrough with a brilliant catch near the boundary to end a dangerous partnership. Still, England remained in contention as Bethell kept the scoreboard moving.
The turning point came in the final overs when Jasprit Bumrah delivered a masterclass in death bowling. His crucial over conceded just six runs, significantly increasing the pressure on England.
Bethell brought up a brilliant century off 48 balls and tried to push England closer to victory with another big hit. But Hardik Pandya responded with a superb penultimate over, conceding only three runs after the first delivery went for six.
With 30 runs required in the final over, Shivam Dube was entrusted with the responsibility of defending the total. England managed a few boundaries but ultimately fell short, finishing on 246/7.

While Samson’s explosive innings laid the platform, the disciplined death bowling from Bumrah and Pandya ensured that India defended their massive total successfully.
England, despite a valiant effort led by Bethell’s stunning century, were unable to complete the chase.
