What does the 10-wickets defeat means?

A 10-wicket defeat is an instance of a result in a cricket match in which the chasing team scores the target without loosing any wicket.

India has been one of the strongest teams of all time. Seldom would you see them getting dominated by another team. However, yesterday was an off day for the Indians as they lost by 10 wickets to Pakistan. This also happened to be the first time Pakistan have ever beaten India in a World Cup game. A 10-wicket defeat is always humiliating to say the least.

A 10-wicket defeat always breaks the morale of a team. India have seen a few instances where they had to face a 10-wicket defeat.

First things first, let’s talk about the most recent game. Pakistan completely outplayed India in what turned out to be a historic game for Pakistan. They restricted India to just 151 owing to a Shaheen Afridi special. Rizwan and Azam then chased it with ease and won the game by 10 wickets. This instances of a 10-wicket defeat is one which the Indian cricket team won’t forget in a long time.

This was the first of the three ODIs against Australia in the start of 2020. India got to a decent score of 255 only for Australia to chase it with ease. Warner and Finch were absolutely superb and chased this total all by themselves. Kohli even admitted to rethink his strategies in the next match of the series where a victory for Australia would mean back-to-back ODI series success against India away from home.

3) India vs South Africa 2005 (4th 10-Wickets defeat of Indian Cricket Team)

This match occurred during one of the most darkest eras of Indian cricket. Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were asked to bat in positions they weren’t comfortable with. Sourav Ganguly and Greg Chappel had their own issues. India were trailing behind the Proteas in this series already. After they got to 188 on the board, SA chased it with ease. Graeme Smith was the star of the match as he scored an amazing hundred to take his team home.

4) India vs South Africa 2000 (3rd 10-Wickets defeat of Indian Cricket Team)

This during the early 2000’s when India were still rebuilding. In the first game of the Coca-Cola Cup at Sharjah, Indian skipper won the toss and decided to bat first. SA were superb with the ball as they bundled India for just the 164. The Proteas openers Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs showed no mercy in their approach and humiliated the Indian bowling attack by chasing down the target in just 29.2 overs.

5) India vs West Indies 1997 (2nd 10-Wickets defeat of Indian Cricket Team)

This was the final game of the series. Sachin Tendulkar was the captain of the Indian team back then. After being asked to bat first, India got off to a good start with the openers doing well. However they then faced a collapse and India only got to 199. West Indies were very cautious towards the start of their innings but later on made it up. Eventually, India lost the game by 10 wickets.

6) India vs New Zealand 1981 (1st 10-Wickets defeat of Indian Cricket Team)

Sunil Gavaskar became the first Indian captain to lose by 10 wickets. After being asked to bat first, India ensured a batting collapse. They were 13/3. Several world class Indian players like G Vishwanath, Kapil Dev, and Syed Kirmani failed to make a mark in this game. They finally got to 112 only for the Kiwis to chase it with ease.
