IPL 2022 Venues
Due to Covid-19 saying bye-bye to the times when we used to have one home and one away match, the whistles we used to hear when Mahi comes to bat at the Chepauk or the fan base we used to witness at the Chinnaswamy Stadium because of King Kohli and Mr 360. So getting back to the present time, As per the official reports Mumbai will be hosting 55 games while the rest of the 15 games will be held in Pune. Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, and DY Patil Stadium are the 3 venues in Mumbai that will host these 55 games. The Maharashtra Cricket Association International Stadium in Pune will host the remaining 15 games. All the 10 teams will play 4 league games each at Wankhede and DY Patil Stadium while 3 matches apiece at Brabourne and Pune. However, the venues for the playoffs are still not finalized.
Now we can hear the real crowd cheers and whistles as the Covid-19 scenario comes back to normal.
Unlike the previous edition of the IPL, this year’s tournament will not be played out in front of empty stands. “Spectators will be allowed as per guidelines set by the Maharashtra government and to start with, it will be 40 percent. If the COVID situation remains under control and cases decline, it might be a full house at the business end,” a source said.
IPL 2022 Team groups
Gone were the days when all the teams have to compete against each other one at home and one away as BCCI brought an interesting twist to this year’s edition.
All the 10 teams of the IPL 2022 edition have been divided into 2 virtual groups which were done on the basis of a seeding system formulated by the number of titles won and the number of finals played.
Mumbai Indians, the 5 champions, were placed in group A, along with 2-time former champions and 1-time finalists Kolkata Knight Riders, the inaugural tournament winners Rajasthan Royals 2-time finalists Delhi Capitals, and new entrant Lucknow Supergiants.
On the other hand in Group B, 4-time winners Chennai Super Kings are placed along with 1-time title winners Sunrisers Hyderabad, 3-time finalists Royal Challengers Bangalore, 1-time finalist Punjab Kings, and the new entrant Gujarat Titans.
Each team will play twice against their respective group members as well as with the team in the same row of the other group. Against the remaining teams of the other group, each team will play only once.
Let’s understand this by an example, MI plays its group A counterparts – KKR, RR, DC, and LSG – twice and also CSK (slotted in the same row in Group B). MI will play other Group B teams – SRH, RCB, PBKS, and GT – only once.
